Was Nixon a covert liberal?
>>
>>535710
No, he was an out and out liberal republican.
>>
>>535710
No. Earl Warren was though, thus lulz ensued when Nixon appointed him to SCOTUS to try and make the court more conservative.

Nixon was a covert Nixonite.

He was fucking stupid with his alignment with PRC and pushing India farther into Soviet Sphere of Influence.
Yes I am asshurt Indian but that's not the point.

India asked Kennedy for aid against china in 1962 war,Kennedy agreed to send Fighter jets but no pilots/instructors to help IAF this made Nehru find a more dependable ally in the soviets past Kennedy's assassination and Cuban Missile Crisis.

At the point when the Sino Soviet split had already happened Nixon citing India being a socialist leaning country
Allies with fucking china that is fucking outright commie.
This asshole could have helped us dismantle Pakistan and the US would've never had to face 9/11 and would have a much better infrastructure against the soviets in afghan.
we'd all be for the better and there'd be no PRC acting up as a rival to US Hegemony in contemporary times.
You'd say that it'd be just India replacing the Chinese in the equation but no that's not the case because republic of India like post WWII japan is not a militarised society or has imperialistic ambitions(made fucking apparent by India not colonising or even inflicting Bangladesh with its sphere of influence after liberating it in 1971).

While Bush Jr. and Obama have both made strides into unfucking the situation this asshole inflicted on us its still a long way to go.
>>
>>535970
The PRC wasn't going anywhere. Still isn't.

>Nehru
Wasn't he a buddy of Nasser as well? Yeah sounds like a great pro-American potential ally right there.
>>
Yes.
>>
>>535720
You're thinking of Harry Blackmun, who Nixon appointed but later made several liberal rulings including Roe v. Wade. Warren was already out by the time Nixon came into office.
>>
>>535982
>Wasn't he a buddy of Nasser as well? Yeah sounds like a great pro-American potential ally right there.
so you'r gonna go with all non aligned countries were pro soviet anyway just in the closet.
typical american ignorance.
>>
Nothing covert about it. He even says in his autobiography that when he first got involved in Republican politics and made his pitch to the Republicans for getting campaign funding (he did in his navy uniform), he described himself as a "practical liberal".
>>
>>535993
Oh, and btw, one of his biggest campaign donors when he was running for congress, was Joe Kennedy.

Can someone explain to me what was so wrong about Watergate?
We have the current president (and the one before him) executing people without even the semblance of due process, maintaining secret prisons, spying on allies as well as on US citizens and more. Each of those is arguably 10 times worse than bugging the fucking Dems at their hotel.
>>
>>535997
Fun fact: Hillary Clinton was on the prosecution team for Watergate and the Democrats kicked her out for ethics violations and fabricating evidence. LOL!
>>
>>535997
The media crucified him, it was as simple as that. That had hated him ever since he ran against JFK, and were relentless ever since.
>>
>>536022
Also the whole thing with the Pentagon Papers and attempting to censor the New York Times probably had a lot to do with the media's hate for Nixon.
>>
I think a lot of the hate for Nixon arise not from anything he personally did or didn't do, but what he was associated with, which is all the shit that went down during his watch. The late 60s-early 70s was when things turned out to be less rosy than promised during the postwar era: ethnic strife, economic slowdown, Vietnam-related scandals and so on. Nixon had to handle all of those things, and did it in his usual effective but ruthless style. Take the opening of China for example; for many it indicates a turn away from committed global ideals of fighting against communism towards wishy-washy foreign policy realism. However by that time it was clear the US was not as hegemonic as it was in the 1950s and 1960s, and Nixon had to steer those unclear waters, which he has done quite intelligently. The Pentagon Papers is indeed another example on the domestic front for something that was bound to happen, and would have probably went down in similar ugliness if it was LBJ or any Dem President.

Having said that Watergate was a tad excessive and demonstrated Nixon's sheer paranoia. He was a complex person.

sauze
>>
>>536050
Just google "Hillary Clinton Watergate." There are a lot of attempts to debunk it, but even the debunkers have to conclude that the truth is ambiguous.
>>
>>536046
The most tragic aspect about Watergate is that it was totally unnecessary. Nixon would have won in a landslide no matter who was running against him as a Democrat, so the whole operation was pointless. Nixon's paranoia was his tragic flaw and Watergate reads like a tragic play from Ancient Greece.

Haven't seen that but Altman's "Secret Honor" starring Phillip Baker Hall (Detective Bookman from Seinfeld) is the greatest and most hilarious Nixon film and portrayal I've seen.

Are there any good, relatively unbiased books on Nixon out there?

I was always taught that Nixon was basically a corrupt fascist and easily the worst president ever, but more and more I see evidence suggesting that's not really the case. I would like to do further reading in this area.

What is it with Republican Quakers who get shit historical rep?
>>
He was pretty pro-environment by Republican standards and he once called himself a Keynesian economist (which wasn't a big deal in his day as the whole Austrian libertarian movement hadn't really taken off yet). Like most Northerners he was opposed to segregation.

In every other respect he was pretty conservative.
>>
>>539513
>Like most Northerners he was opposed to segregation.

He was opposed to de jure segregation, but he wasn't exactly in favor of racial integration.

People are afraid of Quakers for some reason. There's a small enclave of Waiting Worship Quakers in my area, and I had a teacher in high school who thought they were some kind of heretical spin off of Catholicism.

Nixon started affirmative action. It wasn't quota based then, but he still started it.
