Tell me all about the 30 Years War? What happened in the 30 Years War? What was it all about and who was on what side?

It got really fucked up after those hillbillies got dropped into the middle of it by aliens.

Everyone vs. Inbred Austrian family.
>>
>>534312
It was hell. The German states were completely devastated, especially in the later phases.

Read the book by Wedgewood.

>tell me about the 30 Years War

A conflict between the interests of the Catholic Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor and the Protestant German princes which erupted into the formation of two leagues of major nations based on their political support or aggression to the the states involved.

>what happened in the 30 Years War

It lasted a long time; everyone wanted a total victory. A huge portion of the population of the German states was killed. In the end the Protestant League managed to subvert the power of the Habsburgs in Europe.

>what was it all about and who was on what side

Mostly reducing the power of the Habsburgs. Protestant German states were supported by the King of France, the King of England and Scotland, and the King of Sweden. Habsburgs were supported by the King of Spain.

That book is poorly done and pretty bad.
>>
>>534354
Didn't the Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand have a falling out with Spain over Frederick and Maximilian? Or did that get quickly worked out?
>>
>>534372
Which would you recommend?
>>
>>534382
It didn't matter. Spain was Habsburg itself. The King had a certain obligation to defend his dynasty.
>>
>>534312
three guys got thrown out of a window.

Then 8 million people died.
>>
>>534386
Different guy here, but I'm reading a book about it by Peter H. Wilson that seems pretty good.
>>
The 30 years war is misnamed, it was actually a 300(1631-1945) years war between germany and France for european domination.
>>
It was a conflit of power between catholic supported habsburgs (insert jewish conspiracy here) and protestant supported german states and kingdoms (also a lot of guys joined either side by rivalries and convinience)
>>
Were there any people that played both sides? Or switched to the other after betraying one?
>>
>>534876
>(also a lot of guys joined either side by rivalries and convinience)

I found it interesting that the Ottoman Empire aligned with the Protestants as a way of sticking it to the Habsburgs.
>>
Catholics butthurt about Bible-believing Christians.

Catholics get BTFO by Protestants.
>>
It was Spain vs all the other European powers. It supposed the end of the Spanish supremacy.
>>
>>534781
So neither of them won?
>>
>>536289
It was a war of influence between Habsburg and the Kingdom of France that you can trace back to wars of Italy and even earlier. It was the Kingdom of france who came on the top. After this war, France had a total supremacy on Europe (Louis XIV) for a century aand Habsburg empire was broken. Only several coalition were enoug to stop French ambition.
>>
>>535979
The French were catholics so it´s actually catholics were beating protestants untill other catholics started helping the protestants and blowing the first catholics out.
>>
>>534981
Probably some of the local nobles, esp. in Germany, but the sides were pretty solid and consistent for the most part. Largely because it was at least in part a religion-motivated war.
>>
>>536303
>It was a war of influence between Habsburg and the Kingdom of France
Shut the fuck up, no it wasn't, stop posting shit you mongoloid.

France came out on top because it skirmished with Spain and won, had Sweden cripple the HRE, and annexed large quantities of land to the east while the HRE was being ripped apart.
>>
>>536303
>>534781
Didn't France join in only long after the ball started rolling? Like 15 years in or so?
>>
>>536314
>French
>catholics
Dude, they were only catholic in name. Even once they declared war on the Papal States, for god's sake.
>>
>>536322
France didn't significantly, directly contribute to the primary theater of the 30 Years War. He's just memeing.
>>
>>534981
Denmark first sided with the protestants, but then got rekt.

They then afterwards sided with the emperor, only to be rekt again.
>>
>>536325
>they were only catholic in name
No.
>>
>>536325
>As if everyone didn't declare war on the papal states
Hell, Charles V & I occupied Rome itself.

>>536320
France supplied a great deal of the Protestant forces for the majority of the war, even Sweden. From a view of competing interests, it was definitely the Bourbons vs. the Habsburgs, as it had been for about a century at that point. Sweden did much of the work, militarily speaking, but even they needed to be propped up.
>>
>>536328
They gave a lot of money to Sweden, so yeah they contributed. French intervention was decisive, as it happened after Sweden suffered a great defeat against Spain at Nördlingen. Spain was the strongest Habsburg kingdom, its defeat was mostly due to the french intervention.
>>
>>536328
>He's just memeing.
Its also a case of Realpolitik that led to France being the victors of the war while being scarcely directly engaged for most of it.
>>
>>536320
I'm not talking about the thirty years war on itself but how it is the conclusion to multiple conflict where the Kingdom of France and Habsburg empire were engaged through the century for domination of Europe.

But feel free to keep insulting me.

>muh noble swedish contribution
Overrated beyond belief.

gustavus adolphus was a hack that used genocide and wholesale massacres of innocent populations to make up for a total lack of ability. The meme understanding of scandinavia (vikings = stupid hairy bloodthirsty barbarians. adolphus = god) ironically couldn't be further from the true development and history of the region.
>>
>>540114
Gustavus Adolphus reintroduced organizational methods and a dedicated reserve to standing armies, showing that the methods of Tilly - though competent - were outmoded methods of warfare. That is a real contribution, even if "The Swedish Meteor" got shot and no one else was able to pick it up. Generals afterward copied the Swedish military model.

The notion that the storming of Magdeburg was exceptionally barbaric is still true, but it is an exception. All siege warfare had some barbarity, going back to the beginning of recorded history. This is why the Italians attempted to through open their gates during the Italian Wars - to prevent raping, pillaging and massacre; all expected consequences of a siege lost.

Always Breitenfield.

The Father of Modern War, Gustavus Adolphus almost certainly was not. But he may very well have been the Father of the Modern World. Because then, at that place, at the moment when the Saxons broke and the Inquisition bade fair to triumph over all of Europe, the king of Sweden stood his ground.

And proved, once again, that the truth of history is always concrete. Abstractions are the stuff of argument, but the concrete is given. Whatever might have been, was not. Not because of tactics, and formations, and artillery, and methods of recruitment—though all of those things played a part, and a big one—but because of a simple truth. At that instant, history pivoted on the soul of one man. His name was Gustavus Adolphus, and there were those among his followers who thought him the only monarch in Europe worthy of the name. They were right, and the man was about to prove it. For one of the few times in human history, royalty was not a lie.

Not him but I got the audiobook for my commute to listen in short chunks and it was a pain in the ass. His tendency to go ten minutes talking about someone or something using only pronouns and not mention a name especially. But like I said, my problem is just to it in regards to it as an audiobook.

Gustavus Adolphus, got involved ostensibly to aid the protestant cause, but soon turned his campaign into a brazen BLM land-grab, seizing territory from protestant as well as catholic rulers and doling it out as rewards to his cronies.

Is it fair to compare the 30 years war with the current conflict in Syria & Iraq?
>>
Some guys got thrown out of windows. This caused the Protestants to fight against the Empire, and get BTFO. This caused the Danish fight against Empire, and get BTFO.
That motivated the Swedish fight against the Empire, do okay for a few months and then get BTFO. France, who had been funding Sweden, deciding to protect their investment by fighting the Empire and getting BTFO. Finally, after 30 years of blowing people the fuck out, the Emperor decided to make peace.

Started as a religious war between Catholics and Protestants but it really was a war to curb the power of the Habsburgs.

The Bohems were just proud of their German castles mkay?
>>
>>551356
More like proud of their first castle. I don't really understand why do anglos say Wallenstein, when he was always Valdštejn and even if you want to use the german name of the fort it's. Waldstein.
>>
>>551386
"The name, properly speaking, is Waldstein and was originally Waldnstein. As the Czech tongue finds it easy to accumulate consonants at the start of a word, but difficult to do so in the middle, it was pronounced Walstein. The Germans added a consonant or a syllable (Wallstein, Wallenstein, Wahlenstein) according to taste during a period when people were not too particular about consistency of spelling. Albrech himself wrote Waldstein until such time as he betook himself into circles where signature is confined to Christian names or initials.

That Slav stock should have a German name is not hard to explain. The gentry often called themselves after castles built by German master-masons who gave them German names: Sternberg, Rosenberg, Michelsberg, Wartenberg, Lowenberg, Rotstein and plenty more, and hence too Waldstein. When that happened, in the thirteenth century, the notion of seeing it as national betrayal crossed nobody's mind.

The ruins of Castle Waldstein are not far from Turnau. The name derived from the three boulders or rocks, linked by bridges, on which it was erected; the surrounding forest consisted of birches, pines and beeches. He who had it built was dubbed Zdenek and lacked any other name until he called himself, or was called, Waldstein after his new fortress. At that date the construction of stone castles commanded itself because the atrocities of the Mongol invasions which had devastated Silesia and Moravia, lands with kindred destinies, lingered in living memory. Their sovereigns, moreover, were once again weak and the laws no protection.

The man who was simply dubbed Zdenek was the descendant of a widely ramified, old, rich and powerful family which for its part had no name. In the nineteenth century historians called them the Markwarts because their alleged twelfth-century founder was a knight by the name of Markwart. So Bohemiam gentry were not shy of German names and one of this Markwart's sons was called Hermann." [1/2]

Habsburgs may have had conflicts inside of the dynasty - this is true.

However... let me put it like that - protestant league was supported by France - Habsburg arch enemy #1 and The Netherlands - Habsburg arch enemy #2. On top of it the position of Habsburg family as the only sensible candidate for Holy Roman Empire and very rich part of their(now divided) empire - Bohemia - was in danger. There were more important things than their family disputes.

Some Sultan and Queen Elizabeth exchanged letters about how they both thought Protestants and Sunnis were more correct than Catholics and Shi'ites.
>>

" Slav names like Benesh, Hawel, Zawisch, Zdenko and Jaroslav were however frequent among the Markwarts. They ruled in the Iser valley of north-east Bohemia without anyone knowing how and when they acquired their dominion, Slav proto-aristocracy. Remarkable is that from the outset they ruled there where four hundred, even seven hundred, years later the properties of the Waldsteines continued to be, and we shall yet hear of Markwart foundations like the town and monastery of Munchengratz. In the late thirteenth century they split into a variety of clans who began to foster individual identities.

In a latter of recommendation on behalf of young Albrecht Wallenstein, his Moravian brother-in-law, Karl von Zierotin wrote, "He is high-born, as you know, and related to all the great houses of Bohemia," which was true. Not only had one of his ancestors been Lord Chamberlain at the court of the powerful Czech monarch George of Podiebrad, but he was himself descended from this sovereign in as much as one of his maternal great-grandmothers, a Silesian duchess of Munsterberg, was the great-granddaughter of the King, making the latter Wallenstein's forefather in the seventh generation. As for his contemporary kin, the Smirickys, Slawatas, Wartenbergs, Zierotins, Lobkowiczs, and others with equally resounding names, they resided in the castles of Bohemia and the margraviate of Moravia; in the frontier fortresses facing Germany and Hungary, ancient structures perched on crags and enlarged, according to need and current taste, by way of corner-towers, outer baileys and curtain walls; in great houses in the new Italian style, long rows of stone halls set around arcaded courtyards and richly decorated with panelling, gilded carvings, weapons, costly materials, pictures with figures from fable and myth and ancestral portraits; in the market-place of their towns, in the lanes of Prague's Lesser Town, or between tree-topped heights and river valley."
