Can someone give me a brief rundown o fthe history of the New Zealand flag? I understand that it's going to be replaced with a Maori flag because Maori are a majority population in New Zealand, but I'm curious as to who came up with the imperialist design.

It's being used as distraction for the TPPA, etc/to stroke the PMs ego. It likely won't change because a majority do not wish it to.
I cannot remember the reasons behind the flag (except it was 'our' design before Australia, as Australia did not federate until the early 1900s) but there is a wikipedia page explaining it.

it's not being replaced by a Maori flag actually. We have to vote between several designs that are proposed, and then early next year the final design will go up against the old one.
