Well /his/, this awe inspiring lost wonder of the world was just brought up to my attention as of recently.

The Colossus was the representative wealth and power as well as the artistic ability of Rhodian Greeks. Besides its size and honoring the ancient Greeks God Helios and its subsequent destruction in due to an Earthquake in 226 BC. The Prophets of Delphi discouraged the statues reconstruction.

What are /his/torians opinion about its potential reconstruction of this lost Wonder of the Ancient World?

Maybe there was a reason for this? Enjoy killing your father and bedding your mother just because you want to build a statue with a giant 50 foot dong.

HOW IS IT THAT YOU WERE UNAWARE OF THE EXISTENCE, OR THE ALLEGED EXISTENCE, OF THE COLOSSUS OF RHODES UNTIL THE AGE OF TWENTYFIVE YEARS?

Didn't the colossus look more like in Pic related rather than having ships sail between it's legs?

>I'm gonna rage like an autistic fuck over the internet because capslock is cruise control for cool

Guy, I am six terms from finishing my masters degree in history. I have been up and down Ancient Greece harder than a Seljuk-Turk after fresh Greek pussy. I just wanted to hear other peoples opinions on it outside of my professors and my peers.

The simple fact that the Ancient Greeks could build the colossus with extreme precision and without wax still fascinates me. Turn your spergness down from 11 to three.

1. I AM NOT "ENRAGED"; I AM MERELY CURIOUS, AND BAFFLED.

2. "UPPERCASE" LETTERING DOES NOT SIGNIFY "YELLING", OR "SHOUTING", NOR ANY OTHER KIND OF VOCAL MODULATION.

3. YOU DID NOT ANSWER MY QUESTION.

I think you should stop taking silly proposals/projects dug up by journalists every time Greece needs to negotiate its debts seriously.

Nobody will resurrect any kind of ancient wonder (or make new ones) ever. Because we now live in democracies and in democracies you have to listen to the average pleb as if you were listening the opinions of Socrates. And the average pleb wants more welfare, more publicly subsidized Justin Bieber concerts and more circus.
There is no time or money for libraries, monuments, wonders or anything great really.

What is this a blog? I got my BA in History specializing in Byzantine History end of Spring back in 2012 and started last Fall towards my masters to be in Byzantine History specifically on the differences of Rome and Byzantium.

IMO
Babylonian gardens were the best wonder.
I wish they would reconstruct that instead

Personally, I think we should go back to pyramids.

I mean, we have exponentially more power at our disposal.

If we really wanted to, I bet we could get that shit past 5000 feet.

I think positively of it, I think that if history has shown any kind of benefit to central planning (whether by kings or dictatorships) it's the building of impressive monuments and I wish such things would make some sort of comeback in the minds of people - the realization that we are the future's history and that we have a right and maybe even a duty to build great things for them to admire.

Who's behind the project anyway?, the people of Rhodes or some contractor pushing his product?

I agree that it is very subjective, still, I think that the great creations of old have merit and draw people not simply because they are old but because when you look at them and ask yourselves why someone would build such a thing the answer isn't "profit" or "practical use" but leaving a mark.

With me that strikes a deeper chord than simply great feats of practical architecture, which I have plenty of respect for.

The only thing I ever wondered about the Colossus is if you saw his balls when sailing underneath him into the harbor.

Other than that, I'm pretty good.
>>
>>522379

I don't remember where I read it, but I do remember reading somewhere that the pose depicted in OP's pic as well as a lot of popular imagery would have been impossible for some structural reason or another, and that if they wanted it to stay standing, the feet would have had to be together.

Because the question was a symptom of dickishness. Who cares when OP heard about the Colossus of Rhodes? Just talk about the damn thing instead of trying to make your history dick look big.

Also that particular tripfag is a blight upon this board.

Like, a famed giant statue of Augustus similar to the one of Prima Porta?

Nero made a copy of the Colossus, but with his face.
The Flavian Amphitheatre was built next to it, that why its nicknamed the Colisseum.
