Most of Harold's huscarls would have been from Wessex, so, yes. The concept is Scandinavian but the guys would have been Saxon.

>"The term housecarl, then, should be interpreted as a general one for members of one's household"

from the very same book

Why would members of the Earl of Wessex's household be Danes?
>>
>>522121

This, housecarl is literally an old norse word for a member of a household. Its just a title. The Serbian and Bulgarian Empires had a title called Sebastokrator, doesn't mean that the Sebastokrator's were Byzantine Greeks.
>>
>>522121
Why wouldn't they?
>>
>>522137

Because there weren't many Danes in Wessex?

>>
>>522147

>And the few that were, were housecarls

There's no logical reason for this unless Danes were some sort of superhuman warriors that were immeasurably preferable to Saxons in every way
>>
>>522150
You still haven't addressed the fact that virtually all of them had Norse names. If the Roman Emperor had a personal bodyguard of Norsemen, it doesn't seemed too farfetched that English rulers would too.
>>
>>522161

>You still haven't addressed the fact that virtually all of them had Norse names

Read the source you've cherry-picked your picture from. Those described as landowning Housecarls in Domesday Book are predominantly Danish in name.

This tells us absolutely nothing about the composition of Harold Godwinson's household guard.
>>
>>522161
I have to agree with this guy. It's possible that the Norsemen segregated themselves as a distinct caste which happened to serve as warriors. It reminds me of the gallowglass in ireland who were basically norse-scottish clans who served as warriors for centuries there.
>>
>>522168

>It's possible that the Norsemen segregated themselves as a distinct caste which happened to serve as warriors

Then why do we have literally no record of this whatsoever
>>
>>522178
I was only going off the quote that the guy posted that a majority of saxon huscarls had old norse names.
>>
>>522407

In Domesday Book, which post-dates the Conquest.

You could just as easily explain that by saying "all the Saxon housecarls died at Harold's side", it's all conjecture.

Yes. Though you could say that Tolkien purposely chose Saxon words (since it was based on the Saxon poem The Wanderer), the point still stands to show just how similar ordinary usage of modern English is to Old English.

Saxon poetry is fucking outstanding. Very morose and full of woe, but it seems to be very powerful with it.

The Ruin is another great example of this. Made even more appropriate by the end of the poem being damaged in a fire.

Anyone with an interest in Anglo Saxon culture sees the Cotton Library fire as their own Alexandria.

Where now is the horse and the rider?
Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?
>>
>>525462
That is from Tolkien, The actual poem he based it off, or the excerpt, goes like this;
Where is the horse now? Where is the rider?
Where is the gold-giver?
Where is the seat at the gathering?
Where now are the feasts in the halls?
Alas for the gleaming cup!
Alas the mailed warrior!
Alas for the prince’s pride!
How that age has passed,
Dark under night-helm,
As though it never were!
Now there stands at last
Where were the dear host,
A wall wondrous high
Wound with serpents.
The warriors were taken
By the spear’s glory,
Weapons ripe for kill,
Fame of the fated;
These cliffs of stone
Storms batter,
Falling frost
Earth fetters,
Promise of winter;
Then comes darkness,
Night-shadows deepens,
From the north descend
Fierce hail.

During the Ottoman Empire, sure.

But for most of history, Mamluks were from Central Asia. Turkics usually. Since the Caliphates needed competent cavalry and the Turkics had loads of them.

I'm guessing it means spring, as it fits the context of harvest and looks extremely similar to the Dutch 'lente', which is also closely related to Anglo Saxon because both have a part Frisian.

Fun fact, the old Frisians where Christened by mainly Anglo-Saxon missionaries because they spoke a language so similar that they could just convert/preach in dialogue without the need for translators and such.
