Looking for a Byzantine general history, any recs? I'm fascinated but I don't really know where to start.

Other books to check out about Byzantium wouldn't be bad either. Maybe a primary source as well, but all in due time.

lol. No Russian army has ever entered Constantinople. What makes you think Russia-as-second-rate-power would ever accomplish the conquest of Constantinople.

To add to this:

A Short History of Byzantium is just the abridged version of the 3-volume version

Also good are:

Russia could have occupied Istanbul in one of the Russo-Turkish wars at the end of the 18th century. But at the time the Russians were more interested in putting pressure on Istanbul to better their position at the negotiating table. They had no reason to occupy city because it would have turned all the Great Powers against them, not just France and Britain. In fact, this is the reason that Poland got partitioned at the same time. Prussia (specifically Frederick the Great) proposed dividing up the Poland as a way to ease tensions between the Austrians and the Russians in the Balkans.

I don't agree anon. I came to the book when I already knew quite a lot, and my feeling was that if I hadn't already known the narrative history of Byzantium, I would have been very lost a lot of the time. Herrin focuses a lot on the culture of Byzantium, but I'd say Mango's 'Byzantium: The Empire of the New Rome' does it better.

Just my opinion. Have you read her 'Women in Purple'?
