I don't go to church but I do pray to god whenever I need him or to thank him for the good things he gives me but that's about it.

Catholicism isn't nearly as united as it likes to pretend but those are the guidelines most of the various rites and less official factions follow; everybody gives concessions to the modern world that the church reacts to at speeds that make the movement of tectonic plates seem speedy and efficient.
Generally a theme of Catholicism is that we aren't perfect, and are never going to be perfect, but we have the grace of god that enables us to keep trying. Jesus died to give us the gift of forgiveness for our sins; self reflection and prayer are important but so are the acts of charity and decency outlined in the beatitudes.

Don't listen some of these faggots Anon, Church exists to provide a link and community to the faithful to God. The Sacraments do the same thing, I know it might seem like a chore, but it is necessary to grow in faith, and can become a relaxing and beautiful part of your spirituality.
Good job in trying to bring your girlfriend into faith of the Lord, and the fact that you are repentant of your sins is also good. If you are baptized in the Church, try to learn more about the sacraments. There is no better feeling than confessing your sins at reconciliation and partaking in Holy Communion

A Catholic is a Christian who believes in the truth of the Bible, but outside of the Bible believes in countless heretical stories about saints and stuff. Much of Catholic doctrine is not at all based on the Bible. The history of Catholicism is pretty bloody.
