What calendar did the Japanese used to have before the Christian calendar? Why did they adopt a calendar that is based on religion they do not practice? Was there a problem with adopting it?

>Why did they adopt a calendar that is based on religion they do not practice
Because everyone else followed it.

The imperial calender.

Which was also confusing and shitty.

Japan still uses their own calendar for a lot of things.

Their year starts in the spring. Years are the Emperor's name and how many years he has been ruling.

Do they teach their kids in school about the birth of Jesus?

The Lunisolar Chinese one. Like everyone else in East Asia prior Westernization. You know the Boshin War? It's Japanese name is Boshin Senso (The War of the Year of the Yang Dragon).

That said: Nips/Gooks/Chinks follow the Gregorian Calendar for global purposes. To keep up with global time. Otherwise they still maintain their own calendars for festivals and shit.

Just look at Chinese New Year. It's never on a fixed date.

And 2016 is the year of the Fire Monkey.

What religion is that, again?

Janus = January

Janus was the god of times, the beginnings of months, seasons, and years.

The Gregorian calendar is literally just the Roman calendar (Years since founding of Rome) with a few tweaks to stop Easter from jumping around.

They switched away from "Years since Emperor X took the throne" because the Gregorian calendar is much more efficient.

Christian calendar?

The Japanese calendar is still very much in use. Signing up for almost any Japanese website, banks, and any other kind of account when they have you enter your birthday, you usually have to pick 昭和 (Showa/Hirohito) or 平成 (Heisei/Akihito) and then the year of their reign you were born in. This is also how their passports, ID cards, etc. say the years. You can even put your iPhone or computer in Japanese calendar mode.
