It's not a story Plato would tell you. It's a Cynic legend.

Diogenes was a philosopher of the Cynic so power and wise that he could influence Alexander the Great to give him light

Don't let this thread die you fucks, we need to great more daring syntheses.

>He had such a knowledge of philosophy, he could even keep the ones he taught... from caring.
>He could actually... save people from society?
>the dog side of philosophy is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unconformitve.
>What happened to him?
>He became so wise, the only thing he was afraid of was... nothing. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew. Then his apprentice became the founder of Stoicism. Ironic. He could save others from society... but not his philosophy.
>Is it possible to learn this power?
>Not from Plato.

I guess you can read about him to get an idea of how he thought. But for in-depth philosophy, you'll probably have to read Stoic texts and try to find his teachings within them.

Got any recommendations on where to begin with stoic texts?

Epictetus is a good start, particularly the Handbook. After that Meditations or the discourses. Seneca is supposedly another good Stoic philosopher but I haven't read him. Ultimately Stoicism is a lot different to Cynicism but also similar, the main difference is Stoicism doesn't have Cynicism's aversion to society and its irrationality, while Stoicism also doesn't believe things unnecessary to virtue are bad while Cynics do. There's a part where Epictetus talks about Cynics and for a Stoic to become a good one would require fate's favor because it's so difficult.

So he jacked off in public, lived in a barrel, and liked to shame socrates with poultry. Other than his spawn penning stoicism, why the hell should anyone remember him other than an insane "philosopher?"

Because he was most definitely not insane. His actions had much thought and reasoning behind them.

For instance, a good summary of his teachings is in the word "Cynic", which means dog. He saw that the natural life of the dog much more rational and joyful than the irrational, pointless aspects of society. A dog doesn't have any complex relationships, it only has friends and enemies, and is able to easily tell them apart; nor does a dog concern himself with the proper way to bark or to eat, he just does what comes naturally. A dog has a simple life but it is content with it. Diogenes' concept of shamelessness wasn't that he was beneath shame, but that he was above it as a rational being. He saw shame as being an irrational reaction to society's irrational whims. He jerked off in public and ate in the market place because that was what his natural desires told him to do and it was only the irrational whims of society that said he was mad for doing it. He intentionally made his life difficult by sleeping in a jar and having virtually no possessions because they don't make a man any happier, just more comfortable, and he saw that comfort often got in the way of happiness by men living a life that was based on gaining and keeping comfort, not happiness.

His confrontations with Plato also show his intelligence and sanity. Plato had these lofty ideas that had no basis in reality, nor served to make a man anymore virtuous and therefor happier, and Diogenes despised that. He saw philosophy's only purpose was to make man happy, not sophistry, and so he ridiculed Plato's ideas not because he didn't understand them, but because he did and he realized they were pointless.

Now, he also did many things to intentionally piss of people, probably for fun but also to illustrate a point. He was definitely a radical guy, and so you can see the logic of his teachings more clearly when they were followed by less radical people like Crates and Zeno.
