I think you mean mainline divisions after 1968 and most mainline units prior to 1968.

The PLAF in 1963-65 had sufficient organic support in Provincial mainline units to take on airmobile and armour from the ARVN. (Ap Bac)
The 1967 and 1968 offensives (Khe Sanh, Tet 1 Tet 2 Tet 3) involved organic artillery support, hardly "light" infantry.
The 1972 and 1975 offensives were armoured.
South Vietnam should have won that war. Then the South would've annexed the north, We'd have a consistent ally in east asia, we'd open up trade, and bring Vietnam to the level Japan and South Korea is today.
