Yeah that's not what happened. The problem of the Fourth Crusade was the extensive involvement of the Venetians, who were only in it for the money. They didn't give a crap about the Holy Land, they organised the Crusade simply to make money off the Crusaders, who had to pay them for the benefit of being transported. But it was a commercial failure and a lot fewer Crusaders showed up than they thought, so they decided to recoup their losses by raiding their merchant rivals and blackmailed the Crusaders into supporting them. Most French Crusaders refused to participate and either returned home or went on to Syria, but between Montferrat and Hainaut there were still enough to help the Venetians take Constantinople, making Venice the hegemonic commercial power in the Mediterranean.

The Fourth Crusade was literally entirely the Greeks' own fault. Weak, divided government and factions within that government supporting different emperors, fucked up spiritualistic eastern religion with a focus on fanaticism and civil war, etc.

>still believing the 19th century French historiography, which had specific stake in portraying the recently ended Republic of Venice (one of the oldest states in Europe) at French hands as virtuous, of the the Fourth Crusade despite all modern scholarship telling a decidedly different story

Venice gets fucked by Villehardouin's (an experienced and trusted field marshal) misprediction after devoting the entirety of its economic and commercial power to building a fleet for 30,000 crusaders. Venetian power lies entirely in maintaining ease of shipping in the Adriatic, thus they can't leave an openly hostile power alone in the Adriatic while the massive bulk of their military might is going to fight for the holy land. Zara is only protected because the king of Hungary took up the cross (who would go on to never fight against non-Christian powers for the entirety of his reign), all other Crusaders were given right to quell their domains before leaving. Everything after that is Montferrat and Angelus, both legitimate claimants to the throne, pushing toward Constantinople, to perform a standard Byzantine exchange of power (legit claimant coming to the city with a foreign army behind him) that seriously went out of control.
>>
>>612321
Cucktholic revisionism. The West deserves the rape its getting at the hands of refugees.
>>
>>612710
I don't think that holds up when Constantinople made Venice its de facto navy (leaving its own to rot in the Golden Horn), and then fucked them by arresting every Venetian in the empire when the Venetian trade concessions (basically the payment for using the Venetian navy) proved too much. The rulers of Constantinople literally brought it upon themselves.

That's completely false
Even at the height of the British Empire, French was still the lingua franca.

When Russian and Japanese officials met in 1905, they used French
When German officials adressed the British ones in 1914, they used French ("chiffon de papier")
When US soldiers tried to communicate with Italian civilians in 1944, they used French

English only replaced French as the US became a superpower after WW2, and was then popularized by hollywood, pop music and more recently the internet

>The religious differences between the two sides, who viewed each other as schismatics, further exacerbated the problem. The Italians proved uncontrollable by imperial authority: in 1162, for instance, the Pisans together with a few Venetians raided the Genoese quarter in Constantinople, causing much damage.[1] Emperor Manuel subsequently expelled most of the Genoese and Pisans from the city, thus giving the Venetians a free hand for several years.[7]

In early 1171, however, when the Venetians attacked and largely destroyed the Genoese quarter in Constantinople, the Emperor retaliated by ordering the mass arrest of all Venetians throughout the Empire and the confiscation of their property.[1] A subsequent Venetian expedition in the Aegean failed: a direct assault was impossible due to the strength of the Byzantine forces, and the Venetians agreed to negotiations, which the Emperor stalled intentionally. As talks dragged on through the winter, the Venetian fleet waited at Chios, until an outbreak of the plague forced them to withdraw.[8]

The Venetians and the Empire remained at war, with the Venetians prudently avoiding direct confrontation but sponsoring Serb uprisings, besieging Ancona, Byzantium's last stronghold in Italy, and signing a treaty with the Norman Kingdom of Sicily.[9] Relations were only gradually normalized: there is evidence of a treaty in 1179,[10] although a full restoration of relations would only be reached in the mid-1180s.[11] Meanwhile, the Genoese and Pisans profited from the dispute with Venice, and by 1180, it is estimated that up to 60,000 Latins lived in Constantinople.[1]

Yet another proof that the Byzantine Empire was truly and absolutely NOT the Roman Empire. When Clodius and Milo's gangs had regular fights in the city, and Clodius ended up being killed just outside the city, Milo ended up being exiled (though he might have been found not guilty if Pompey hadn't meddled), and all their followers left alone.

The true Romans understood that it's the leaders of the group, and not the members themselves, that create trouble.
