The Iran-Iraq war, AKA WW1 with helicopters.

>Iran has a revolution
>Saddam doesn't want their ideas spreading and threatening his dictator ship so he invades
>Gets beat the fuck back
>Iran invades Iraq so as to stop Saddam's shenanigans
>US tries to come up with an excuse to glass Iran, so Iran is unable to effectively cut off Iraqi supply lines for fear of intervention
>Iraq forces a ceasefire by repeatedly dropping nerve gas on heavily populated civilian centers
>World leaders collectively give Saddam a handjob and he never does anything bad again

The Battle of the Marshes was particularly fucked up. Barbed wire and live electrical cables were run through the water while Iraqi helicopter pilots would "hunt" the Iranian soldiers. Mustard gas was also heavily used.
It was only due to Iranian zerg rushes that they managed to "win" the battle.
>>
>>473854
It's pretty interesting how badly we could have avoided like 70% of all the world's conflicts right now if we just never intervened with the Middle East in any of their conflicts.
>>

Saddam didn't invade Iran because he was afraid of of Islamic populism spreading to Iraq, he invaded because he thought the country was in disarray and wouldn't be able to mount an effective resistance. He wanted to take Iran's Arab-speaking regions, specifically in Khuzestan, and take all of the Shatt-al-Arab.

Unfortunately for him, his army turned out to be a lot less effective in the field than he thought it was.

Funny thing is, resources fall under the umbrella of "security". So it's correct to say that all wars are fought over national (read: state) security.
Of course, the concept of security is totally ambiguous and subjective, so the equivalence, while correct, provides no insight.

>>

>Using big words to sound smart: the post
We're all anon here, anon. You don't have to wave your thesaurus around.

If the goal of IR theory is to understand international relations in order to make valid predictions as to how certain actors will perform under specific stimuli, why shouldn't it be reductivist? If you make a seperate set of variables for every instance that every actor goes through you can never make any meaningful conclusions as every new scenario starts with fresh variables.

The Lobster War

>the Brazilian government refused to allow French fishing vessels to catch spiny lobsters 100 miles off the Brazilian northeast coast,[5] arguing that lobsters "crawl along the continental shelf", while the French sustained that "lobsters swim" and that therefore, they might be caught by any fishing vessel from any country.

In the 1960s no less.
Ended with 1 french ship being apprehended.

I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't do this shit for a living, i'm just a shitposter on 4chan. Haven't even read any books on IR

IR serves the state.
Its theoretical categories are facile and reductivist.
It cannot produce agreed predictions within a particular theoretical discourse.
Its predictions fail.

It is not a humanity because of its reductivism, and it is not a social science because of its predictive failure at the level of problem specification.

The Lobster War (also known as Lobster Operation) is an ironic name given to a dispute over spiny lobsters which occurred from 1961 to 1963 between Brazil and France. The dispute was resolved unilaterally by Brazil, which extended its territorial waters to a 200-mile zone, taking in the disputed lobsters' bed.[6]

The Cod Wars (Icelandic: Þorskastríðin, "the cod war", or Landhelgisstríðin, "the war for the territorial waters"[1]) were a series of confrontations between the United Kingdom and Iceland regarding fishing rights in the North Atlantic. Each of the disputes ended with Iceland's victory.[2][3] The final Cod War concluded with a highly favorable agreement for Iceland, as the United Kingdom conceded to a 200 nautical-mile Icelandic exclusive fishery zone.[3]

The term "cod war" was coined by a British journalist in early September 1958.[4] None of the Cod Wars meet any of the common thresholds for a conventional war though, and may more accurately be described as militarized interstate disputes.[5][6][7][8]

World War One was the most needlessly destructive without a shadow of a doubt.

There was literally no point, it wasn't a clash of ideology (Vietnam, Korea) or facing a genuine evil (WWII). It was the rulers who sent millions of young boys to their death and made the world an irrevocably worse place at the conclusion of the war.

Without a doubt the most tragic event in human history.
