Honestly though, It makes sense to build things out of wood up north. Trees are everywhere and wood is much more resistant to environmental stress like winters. Pretty sure it keeps heat in better than stone too. A) Empire (born of violence) is just as likely to cause stagnation as advancement. Europe only got ahead in weapons tech leading up to Columbus because it was divided up into many relatively equally powerful nation-states instead of large empires like the Ottomans, Mughals, and the Ming.
B) Military tech dominates technological advancement only when that is where the most money is allocated. All the advancements would come from other fields if we stopped investing in military tech and started investing it elsewhere. It doesn't matter if it's building nukes, putting a man on Mars, or building a giant statue of Don Rickles in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. R&D yields advancement. You don't need to blow up humans and human infrastructure in order to advance humanity.

Incorrect. They didn't consume all competing nations like empires are supposed to do. European nations were their competitors. There is no reason to try to advance when warfare is assymetrically in your favor because you dominate the entire region. Bigger and better canons don't mean shit unless you have neighboring nations also with canons.
Furthermore, it was Europe's ability to keep many independent nation-states coexisting relatively peacefully (many small wars instead of one huge war of imperial conquest turning a new Roman empire) that allowed that relatively quick technological advancement. China didn't need great canons because the nomads to the north didn't have canons.
