Did the New Deal really help the American economy in the 1930s?

Yes

How?
>>

>increase GDP
>decrease unemployment
>create regulations that stop the regular cycle of banking crises until they get repealed
>>

Overall yes, because we were literally losing our ability to produce because of it. While the practices are generally bad and distortionary, when you have the entire midwest dying off and the dust bowl because farmers can't afford to replenish their land, you have to do something to help the farmers.

Fixing ambiguity
*losing our ability to produce because of the crash and depression.

From my understanding, the New Deal kind of helped the economy, but it was World War II that really did it. The New Deal did not hurt, but it wasn't until WWII that the US truly left the Depression.

This is true, the new deal kept us from falling too hard, but ww2 picked us up.

What is "the American economy"?

Answer that and you've got your answer.

No

The WPA created temporary jobs that left local government with facilities it could not afford to keep running or maintained. It pushed out the ability of private companies to take on these projects, and left them in the hands of unexperienced officials.

Basically, Jim Bobs Construction company fired most of his employees because the government was eating up all the local contracts. Jim Bob's company can't compete with the government, because not only is the gov. getting better rates on all its equipment and supplies, it also doesn't have to worry about making a profit on this These projects. Which by the way, were run and planned by little more than office secretaries in the most complicated way possible since they had no idea what they were doing. Then the people who got these jobs (many of which had just been fired by Jim Bob), realized that once the project was over, they had nothing else to do because for all that they learned, the people who could have hired them and used their experience, had been driven out of business.
Not only that, but the areas that needed the stimulus and job creation the most, the deep south, received the lowest number of public works projects. Instead they were basically handed out to the friends of whoever was in charge of setting these kinds of things up at that time.

Keep in mind, this is the same administration that thought destroying produce and slaughtering animals in order to raise demand was a good thing... all during a food shortage.
So not only were they destroying your food, they were purposefully doing it just to raise the price, which you likely couldn't afford in the first place.

Oh yeah, and they also raised your taxes during all of this. Actually, most of those taxes are still in place, depending upon where you live.
