Why has the base of support for communist movements and revolutions historically been illiterate/uneducated peasants and unskilled laborers? Is communism dependent on the ignorance and stupidity of the masses to succeed?
Upper and middle classes very rarely support radical political movements on a large scale because they're invested in the current system.

Also, plenty of educated people were marxist back in the day. Today almost none are.

These are the people communism seeks to help.

That and people who know what they're doing at the helm, which is what the Pseudo-Marxists of today think they'll be when in reality they'll be one of the first to be torn apart.

It hasn't been.
Never mind that "base support" is a meaningless concept.
There have been two large bodies of recruitment for communist groups.
Small useless sects and parliamentary talk shops tend to recruit bourgeois, managerial and supervisory staff. Examples include the Bolshevik party prior to 1917.
Mass parties tend to be based in the dominant working class activities of the day. Historically, however, their leaderships have had the composition of the sects above. Examples include the CPA, CPNZ, ALP, NZLP, UKLP, CPUSA during its non-sect periods, PCF, PCd'I, PCI, CPGB and on.

what you said can be said about any popular system. In the deep south of the U.S.A, plenty of poor masses support the right-wing republican party and the tea-party movement.
Poor does not imply stupid, and wealthy does not imply smart.

If you're too sectarian to recognise the proletarian base then you're going to have problems organising with fellow workers.
