Any of the Ottoman Empire's battles would do I guess. Because you know, Europeans can't lose unless they're heavily outnumbered and even then they would take down half of the opposing army. Ottomans conquered eastern Europe out of luck anyway.

The point is, number estimation in battles are very badly done usually.

When you do a last stand, you can't win, you're not doing it for yourself, you're doing it for the sake of others, even if you think its existential or something.

Either you're doing it for a cause that other people benefit from, or you prove that people can do last stands, which acts as a deterrent in the future to people cornering an injured beast.

This was so fucking brutal, holy shit.
Zhang Yun was an absolute madman.

>The Tang soldiers fought bravely until early October. Finally, with fewer than 400 men alive, and the men without the strength to shoot arrows, Suiyang fell to the Yan army. Zhang Xun said before the fall, "We are out of strength, and can no longer defend the fortress. Although we have failed the emperor in life, we hope to keep killing enemies after death."

>Zhang Xun, Nan Jiyun and Hui Yuan were all captured. Yin Ziqi asked,"I heard that every time you fight, you open your eyelids until they rip, and you bite your teeth until they crack. Why do you do that?" Zhang Xun answered, "I want to eat you traitors alive. The damages to my eyes and teeth are nothing." Yin Ziqi used a dagger to hold open Zhang Xun's mouth, and to his surprise, all but three of Zhang Xun's teeth were indeed cracked. Zhang Xun finally said, "I die for my emperor, so I will die in peace."

What the shit

That's because Zulus were basically African Romans, both in tech level, but also in the strengths the Romans had, I.E. the ability to regulate their manpower to a massive degree.

A defeat like that would have caused the immediate collapse of comparably sized South African polities. But the Zulus just come back with a new army.

came here to post this. Zhang Xun was a fucking maniac.

>Zhang Xun is besieged in Yongqiu fortress, which he took himself by siege from its disloyal governor with 3k men. Zhang Xun now has 2k men, while the enemy camped outside have 40k

>needs more food
>who has food? the enemy
>goes and raids enemy camp, despite the fact that they outnumber his force 20-1
>now has enough food to survive

>needs more arrows
>who has arrows? The enemy
>get enemy to shoot at him by making straw dummies and dangling them over the wall. Enemy turns dummies into pincushions. Zhang Xun pulls them up and now he has all the arrows he needs
>enemy figures out about the dummies.
>now the enemy doesn't pay attention when figures are coming over the walls. now Zhang can send 500 of his of men over the walls to ambush the enemy. Which they do, killing 10000 and causing the remaining 20k to run ten miles before they reform. Enemy reoccupies their camp, and presumably finds that some of their dead have been shot with their own damn arrows.

>needs more lumber
>where are trees? outside walls, where the enemy are
>Zhang Xun politely asks enemy to move back 30 miles. Which they do, because Zhang Xun has told them he wants to leave them the fortress and will do so if they give him room to escape.
>Zhang Xun cuts all the lumber he needs, returns to fortress

We really don't talk about Zhang Xun enough.

>both in tech level,
No. They might have had ironworking but there the similarity ends. The zulus had no armour, could only make shields out of cowhide, and most importantly had none of the logistical backing that the romans had. It would be more accurate to call them African mongols - a previously disorganised tribal people brought to prominence by one man with plan. The reforms instituted by Shaka Zulu bear a striking similarity to the changes brought about by Genghis Khan, in that he actually created organised units commanded by someone promoted on basis of ability rather than family.

The difference being that unlike the mongols, instead of seeing the benefits of this the Zulus murdered Shaka.

What's the difference between a tactical and strategic victory?
>>
>>465299
>A tactical victory may refer to a victory that results in the completion of a tactical objective as part of an operation or a victory where the losses of the defeated outweigh those of the victor.
>A strategic victory is a victory that brings long-term advantage to the victor and disturbs the enemy's ability to wage a war. When a historian speaks of a victory in general, they are usually referring to a strategic victory.

Here's another one. Considering usually half of the large armies were Impedimenta faculty and easily cause larger turmoil when the leading troop collapse, they were probably not exaggerating much.
btw Chinese historyfags commonly refer Liu Xiu as the Son of Dimension who defeated Wang Mang, the socialist time traveller.

One of America's greatest moral and tactical victories

It's a pity that the country collapsed afterwards because the isolationist/'MoveOn.org' dumbfucks demanded the troops be pulled out, and because helping to rebuild civilization there reminded them of colonial imperialism and IMPERIALISM = BAD, MKAY.

never mess with sikh fucks or you'll have your shit slapped

still... if you want to see battles won against all odds check for small countries.
e.g.: portugal - who was pretty much always representing the underdog role due to severe lack of manpower and yet they kicked spain ass time after time (to ultimately lose the kingdom in political games without any blood being shed)

>pic related: maybe be a bitch move since it's a siege but it still counts

and there's also napoleonic france like this one pointed >>457832 in which most battles waged were against france when talking about numbers - when the opposite happened the enemy would usually surrender or retreat instead of actually fighting

they were unlucky enough to be fighting portugal's best commander of all time...
not only he delayed the inevitable long enough for disease to break out on the enemy ranks but he also made them fight each other and even ended up attacking them when they thought he was supposed to play defensive thus winning an impossible siege.

what's there not to like it - it's the ultimate act of bravery.
you know you'll die in the end, you know you won't be saved, you can surrender at most of the times and yet you decide to fight until everyone is massacred.

>pic related:
"surrender me m8s" t. englaland

napoleon commits the old guard when waterloo was lost to let the rest of the army retreat. so you "la crème de la crème" those who refused to cooperate with the monarch while napoleon was exiled and those who fight with him during several campaigns all over the world - obeying the order to die for the rabble since they were the only ones able to buy enough time for all to go away since they were pretty much unbreakable and like some say ""the guard dies and does not surrender!"
