If anything, Stalin proved that totalitarianism works great. The USSR had huge development under him, and reached its height, and then it progressively got weaker as Stalin's successor liberalized the country, and then it finally collapsed when Gorbatchev attempted his reforms.

He was an idealist that tried his hardest to achieve an idea, but met fierce resistance by other world leaders, and the harsh realities of after war depression and poverty, and being russian. Faced with them he realized his task was impossible, so he began a campaign of damage control until the environment is more suited for the progress he wanted. I imagine at some point he became paranoid, and this drove his actions further.

I hate when people point out to the murders as if thats a commie thing. No, thats a russian thing, and a chinese thing. More an asian thing really, and hasnt to do with communism.
The socialist government in the UK didnt do any of that shit, up to the point that people ignore their nationalization of industry and pretend they werent commies at all.
