I just love David Graeber.
In search of respect is a good read
Any and all anthropology is cultural marxism and nigger apologia. There should be no study of human cultures and societies on groups that are not even biologically human. SJWs fuck off to >>>/reddit/
>>440571
I'm a fan of Paleo-anthropology.
It's such a shame that we're the only species of humans left on the planet now.
>>440829
>cultural marxism
will this meme ever die?
>nigger apologia
fuck off
Interested in it but slightly afraid the field has turned into some chaotic, pseudophilosophical Frankfurt School idolizing horseshit lately: has it?

>yfw one volcano killed a subspecies of hobbits
Check out Marcel Mauss, Claude Levi-Strauss, Pierre Clastres...

>Volcano causing their extinction
>Subspecies
Homo floresiensis was a separate species and Indonesian folk tales tell of modern humans chasing them into caves and burning them to death.

>Levi-Strauss
May as well tack Taylor on there too and just tell OP to take a few of the upper 200 lvl courses.

>tfw we could have a mixed species of short humans with Hobbit DNA to fuck but they all died out
It's weird how Tolkien Earth was about 70,000 years ago. You have Humans, Neanderthals, Denisovans, whatever the hell Africans fucked that left a small amount of their DNA in (probably Heidelbergensis or the predecessor to our species), possible populations of Homo erectus, Hobbits, Red Deer Cave People, and a bunch of teeth that's thought to be from a big human speices in Asia.
So humans, dwarves, elves, orcs, trolls, hobbits, etc

All because they took their children and wanted to make them teach the creation of fire.
Goddamn it proto-Indonesians.

You're in luck! Sign up for an anthropology degree, and join David Harvey and Graeber and others writing some academic fan fiction!

*tips*
Ethnography is what exactly?
>>441404
academic fan fiction
>>441404
Nowadays, anthropology, ethnology and ethnography tend to be merged (and in a way, a lot of works in sociology). Ethnography firstly described the very field work, when you're meeting people, writing about it, etc.
>>441296
>No rich daddy to pay for archeology
You do know that archaeology is a subfield of anthropology, right?
>>441597
Only in the US
>>442307
In Europe too
>>442873
Nope. Sub-field of History.
>>440571
For some n00b intersted in starting anthropology maybe Travels with Herodotus by Ryszard Kapuscinski could he a good starting point.
>>441296
Harvey is the most bloody pretentious ass I've ever seen crop up out of academia
His utopian politics are kind of saddening and pathetic especially
historical anthropology and anthropology based history is literally the shittiest and most autistic field in the humanities, which is already shit and a joke with a huge underlying racialist subtext. it's what people who harbor nazi tendencies or have the delusion they are better than everybody else because of WE WUZ X N SHIT go into.
nowadays there is a huge huge emphasis on human environment interaction in anthropology. if you have a heavy understanding in STEM and biological fields it would be a huge help
>>443631
This. The man is a quack.
>>441404
Have you ever written an autoethnography?
>>441161
not him but i guess i am just an idealist
>>443668
hehe :^)
>>444282
No whats that?
I've never understood why anthropology exists. it seems like everything it encompasses is an independent thing. for example, physical anthropology. why isn't that just considered biology?
>>446358
and cultural anthropology, why isn't that just sociology? why isn't archaeology considered history?
>>446358
Fields aren't only their titles mate
>>446411
I don't see your point.
>>446411
what I'm asking is what is the point of having a separate field for physical anthropology, when the work done in that field is no different from biology.

Physical anthropology is GOAT and lives on in forensic science.
all others are bitch fags and losers
>>446874
Sure mate, whatever floats your boat
>>446490
I can't reply for physical anthropology, that's not what I'm doing. Though I could imagine why you don't have to only call that biology, it's more precise than that. Just as cellular biology or ethology are biology too, but if you just say "biology" you don't say a lot about these fields. Here it's a care for the human thing, with biological tools. I don't particularly see any problem to call that anthropology.
Concerning cultural anthropology, the only thing that really really approaches it - nowadays - would be qualitative sociology (and that's a general rule more than an absolute reality. It depends of times and people). I don't particularly try to make a difference between the two of them, though these two fields have a different story. I know a lot of people who think sociology and anthropology are different, because of the way of considering alterity which would be quite central in anthropology, whereas in sociology it would be more on the social aspect.
Radcliffe-Brown's Andaman Islanders is great, pure science without any literary bullshit.
>>440829
nice meme
>>445902
It's an ethnographic study of oneself. Like a scholarly autobiography using anthropological methods.
>>441161
I don't give a fuck about his ideal form of government, I like his anthropological analysis and accounts.
>>440680
No, John. You are the trash
>>450124
I fail to see how could one make an autoethnography. I mean, the main point in ethnography is to study the social thing.
Do you have any example I can read of such a thing?
