So, tell me about tenochtitlan and why it's the best city ever.

>built in the middle of a lake on top of the water somehow
>no plagues
>most populated city during its time
>even Spaniards were amazed by its magnificence
>"When we saw so many cities and villages built in the water and other great towns on dry land we were amazed and said that it was like the enchantments (...) on account of the great towers and cues and buildings rising from the water, and all built of masonry. And some of our soldiers even asked whether the things that we saw were not a dream? (...) I do not know how to describe it, seeing things as we did that had never been heard of or seen before, not even dreamed about."

—Bernal Díaz del Castillo,The Conquest of New Spain

Based tenochtitlan is always left out
>>
You know, I would really respect Mexico if they spoke Nahuatl and stopped acting like Spanish culture is thier indigenous heritage.
>>
>>411431
Tenochtitlan was cleaner and more populous than London at the same time period, they also had chinampas which were floating gardens that could yield up to 7 harvests per year.

They also came up with the idea of transporting food and materials via canals (something only until the industrial revolution was implemented in Europe) which is why they never really had the need of beasts of burden and wheels.
>>
>>411470
>nahuatl is the only indigenous language in Mexico

Spot the retard.
>>
>>411473
>they never really had the need of beasts of burden and wheels.

They never had good beasts of burden or a wheeled vehicle to begin with. That's probably why they were able to utilize other methods of transportation that appear so impressive..
>>
>>411521
They probably had access to buffaloes thanks to their trading routes and had experience in breeding animals for specific traits shown by the xoloescuincle.

They simply didn't have the need for beasts of burden.

Do you realize Nahuatl is very different from Mayan, Yaqui or Huichol? Just because they're called "Aztecan" doesn't make them Nahuatl.
>>
>>411470
>and stopped acting like Spanish culture is thier indigenous heritage

But they don't do that? A lot of them fucking despise Spain and love saying how they are a mixed nation, that's the politically correct thing to do there.

Mayo is not even maya or geographically close to the mayan lands. Mayans don't speak an uto-aztecan language. Mayan languages are a different language family by themselves.

They were clearly more advanced than the africans and native americans.

There's barely any genetic difference between the English and the Welsh. I really hope you don't think every single Englishman descends from Angles and Saxons because it's very likely they were only a small minority that subdued and assimilated the more numerous Celtic locals.

tenochtitlan is pretty based
lower population estimates for 1500 place the population at about the same as paris, one of the the greatest cities in europe at the time

I guess it'd look like something akin to India if they didn't die of plagues and had their communities demolished.
>>
>>412090
The Inca were based, I don't know enough to make value judgements for other pre-columbian civilisations though.

>>412393
The British in the late 1700s dismantled the Indian textile industry, turning India into an agricultural supply economy for a reassembled textile industry in primarily England, so I'm not sure they would.

I imagine internal strife would bring the Mexica low at some point. The Spanish waltzed into an emerging civil war.

This is the fuckin stupidest comment ever. That's like picking only one side of your family... father's side or mother's side... being their offspring you have the fucking right to be either or... Same goes of mixed ethnicity or heritage... Most Mexican culture is still Indegenous except the Spanish language and religion. It's still a blend of two. And you would have to adopt the dominant language especially if you were trying to survive. The is also Indegenous and some religious holidays and folklore still exist even in the modern Mexican. They have day of the dead and the lady Guadeloupe who is a mixture of the moon goddess and the Virgin Mary.

>>
>>412113

Yes, Tenochtitlan ruins are still visible today here in downtown Mexico City. You can see remnants of the Huei Teocalli (main pyramid), buildings, and even the Calmecac (university) found recently when trying to build an underground parking lot!

The lake is gone, only a tiny pond nearby Texcoco and a small lake at Zumpango. Technically it wasn't ONE lake, but a superlake much like the interconnected Great Lakes in the US/Canada. Lake Texcoco was composed of Xochimilco lake, Zumpango lake, Cuitlahuac lake, and Xaltocan lake.

One of the most amazing things the Aztecs did was completely transform half of lake Texcoco from a mostly useless saline lake into a largely freshwater one using a complex system of dikes and canals. This way they opened up the lake for chinampa ("floating garden") agriculture that supported the huge population of Tenochtitlan and the whole Valley of Mexico.

>>414788
The Spanish destroyed all the architecture in Tenochtitlan, but the bases of the pyramids are still there. You can see the way one pyramid was built over another every few years. Pic related.

It's funny, it's really not hard to imagine the bad smell of medieval cities, as long as the poverty inside. But if the town is from another civilization, it didn't smell bad, was well organized and had no poor people.

I always imagine the mesoameircans evolving into something like Japan. They already had the "honor" thing, warriors dominating society, a minimalistic trend in the arts.

>>
Atotoztli of Colhuacan. Her sister founded Tenochtitlan.
>>
Ilancueitl of Colhuacan, first ruler of Tenochtitlan. After Tenoch founded the city, they weren't recognized by other nations. They went and seek for Ilancueitl and Acamapichtli to rule them, both of royal lineage. But since Ilancueitl's lineage was more powerful (Colhuacan beat any time Azcapotzalco) she became the ruler.

The problem was that she was barren, this carried political and genealogical difficulties. In the end she was slowly but surely erased from the official list of Aztec rulers.

Another woman also ruled the Aztecs, Atotoztli II (not to be confused with Atotoztli I sister of Ilancueitl). Also erased from history.
