Seems to me like they settled in areas that are largely to cold and dry to farm. So they've lived primarily as pastoral nomads. This lifestyle isn't conducive to supporting large populations or maintaining large nations for long. With few people and few resources, they've been out-bred and overpowered by the Chinese and Russians.
I know a lot of people hate on geographic determinism, but look at where Tungusic people live. There's not much going for them there. And with their small population, moving would mean being assimilated into China, Russia, or another populous nation. Which is what will most likely happen to them eventually.

There are a lot of people studying Manchu and speaking it like Latin, etc. But not natively.

I you look closely on that map, you can see a gap between the two big pink areas. This map doesn't show, but that is Jakutia, an ethnic autonomous republic inside Russia, while the Tungusic people don't even have their own republic, the western pink territory is Krasnoyarsk krai, while the eastern is Amur and Habarovsk krai, ethnic Russian territorries. So the question is, why Jakuts did better compared to Tungusic peoples as their lifestyles were basically the same both of them being nomadic reindeer herders.
