Why is he treated as a saint by Americans?
>>
>>397000
Because Americans refuse to do research.

If they did, they would find he:
>gave weapons to Iran
>armed literal terrorists in South America
>armed literal terrorists in Afghanistan
>legalized abortion as governor of California
>signed the automatic weapons ban bill into acton
Quite anti-American of him.
>>
>>397016
This desu
the Eternal Californian strikes again.
>>
>>397000
Because we're engineered to be actually retarded.
>>
>>397000
The USSR happened to collapse during his regime, so people attributed the US victory in the Cold War to Reagan's policy decisions.
>>
>>397053
But that was under Bush 41 senpai
>>
>>397000
>Why is he treated as a saint by Americans?

After 1950 a deliberate hagiography of recent presidents began in US popular and scholarly media. Reagan was merely the beneficiary of this by the late 1980s.

For a contrasting perspective, read Matt Groenig's comic from the early 1980s, "Life in Hell." Reagan was bitterly resented through the 1980s by a significant proportion of the US adult public, mostly non-voting or "democratic base" if you understand what I'm implying.
>>
>>397000
Most Americans hate him actually.
>>
>>397000
They remember the optimistic campaigning bullshit, that he got the hostages back from Iran, and that the Soviet Union went from a fierce enemy to the brink of collapse while he was in office.

They forget that he was responsible for training and arming Osama bin Laden.
>>
Damn Perfidious Grizzlies
>>
They demonized him while I was in Highschool, America has gone full democratic socialism and resents him now
>>
>armed literal terrorists in South America
>armed literal terrorists in Afghanistan

There was nothing wrong with that, desu. It was about fighting commies.
>>
>>397000
>legalized abortion
So he did a good thing. Cool.
>>
He ruined the currency of the US. Everyone's still screwed to an extent.
>>
Because Carter told Americans to put on a sweater.
>>
>>397000
Because he saved us from 4 more years of Carter
>>

oh the horror. sane monetary policy, fighting back against the military industrial complex, foreign policy that didn't involve military intervention.

Reagan had to hire back all of Carter's finance people to end the recession Reagan's original finance people caused.
>>
>>397250
>America grew to its greatest extent with the Soviets as their rival
>America is sinking to its lowest with terrorists as its only enemy
>>
>>397000
>charismatic man's man
>decreased taxes
>increased spending
>economy temporarily boomed
I could understand loving him if it were still 1989 or something but the economy predictably came crashing down shortly after he left office. That plus his supplying arms to very dangerous groups makes him a very bad president.
>>
>>397338
this is only skimming the surface of Reagan's administration.
>>
>>397338
oh and all those people that became millionaires from oil during the 80s. they can thank Carter for that. Carter deregulated the price of domestic oil. which increased the amount of oil being drilled for.
>>
>>397000

American here.

As much as I hate this fucking phrase, the conservative worship of Reagan is the very definition of "feels, not reals."
>>
>>397356
>>397351
Don't forget that he defeated Carter in the 1980 election by conspiring with the Iranian government to delay the release of their 52 American hostages until after the election in exchange for arms.
>>
>>397429
I'm fairly certain the entire Iranian revolution was a plot by the Military Industrial complex to remove Carter.
>>
>>397016
>armed literal terrorists in Afghanistan
Not even trying to defend Reagan, but those guys were no terrorists. Unless you argue that every muslim with a gun is automatically a terrorist, which I guess is a common belief on 4chan.
>>
>>397073
So was Clinton and certainly not just because he had his cock sucked.

But hear anyone talk about Clinton now and it's all "cool guy this, budget surplus that, wish we had another Clinton".

I don't even understand why Americans turn so many meme presidents into a fucking personality cult, from the founding fathers through FDR and JFK up to Reagan and even Obama.
>>
>>397476
America supported the Northern Alliance anyways. Any american support towards Osama was probably due to the S*udis.

Not just the Saudis but Pakistanis. The Paki intelligence was given cash they were to arm rebels with thanks to their connections in the area, the problem was there was oversight and the US had no clue where the money is going to. I read memoirs of some former CIA official who was bitching like a madman that nobody actually knew what in the fuck were the ISI doing with the money.

Even the Taliban was effictively created in the madrasahs of Pakistan in the early 90s. The real mistake the Americans did wasn't arming the rebels, it was allying with those Paki fucks.
>>
>>397507
*no oversight

nice trips
Most people just hear that he's the best and someone tells them 5 facts about why he's the best, then they memorize them and spread it further.
Another thing he has going against him was he let large corporations buy up media companies making the us media a literal propaganda shit
machine

Reagan isn't seen as universally great. The society is polarized, Republicans see him as a demigod who single handedly made America great again and destroyed the USSR, the Democrats view him as a boogeyman fascist who pulled his pants down and took a big fat shit on the little man.

Both of them are giving him too much credit.

People like Contra weren't terrorists per say, but they were right-wing insurgents who waged a guerrilla war with a fairly high amount of collateral damage to Nicaragua. Mind you, the country recovered quite well and is one of the most stable states in the region now, but the tactics Contra used were particularly brutal, especially when compared to the Sandinistas.

This wasn't the first nor last time insurgent groups would be supported by either side of the Cold War, nor was it the bloodiest. However, I think many people find it incredibly deplorable considering a)the Cold War was clearly cooling down and such measures were seen largely as unnecessary at that point, and b)Nicaragua was actually doing quite well for itself (and still does) under the Sandinistas, thus throwing the country into turmoil AGAIN was seen as inhumane.

When did the fucking Nicaraguan contras move to Afghanistan?
>>

>weren't terrorists per say

>they're not terrorists if we support them

>full democratic socialism
I don't think you know what that means. I don't recall our system a)having the means of production in the hands of the working class OR b)being particularly democratic given certain structural obstacles and influences of wealth in politics.

At BEST you could argue that certain elements of American policy come from rationale held in common with social democrats, but nobody outside of Sanders has truly championed that political position successfully in recent decades.
>>
>>397574
Fuck, reading comprehension on my part.

The Mujahideen were something of an unfortunate case, as the invasion of Afghanistan really wasn't justified by the USSR in any meaningful way, thus I can't really fault supporting opposition too greatly. However, the fact that US intelligence MUST have known that these people were not going to end their fight with Afghanistan (considering many were fighters originating from other parts of the Middle East) is indicative of how fucking careless the administration of the time was in their desperate efforts to extend political influence and block opposition influence. The fact that we are STILL cleaning up that mess today boggles the mind to think that the US could POSSIBLY make such a fucking moronic foreign policy decision.
>>
>>397581
I say they weren't terrorists per-say because I resent the classification of "terrorist" to begin with. It's a meaningless classification utilized by the state (take your pick on which one for your preferred regional flavor) to demonize anyone who acts as an opposition force or voice, regardless of ideological validity.
In Nicaragua's case, Contra would be better described as a foreign-backed counter-revolutionary force (not unlike the kind that tend to pop up whenever a socialist revolution occurs): that is what they were seen as internally.

Where do you think Al Qaeda came from? We funneled 50 Billion dollars worth of weapons to the Taliban in the 80's to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan.

...and unlike the Contras, it was legal (well, mostly legal).

Reagan also gave Saddam his chemical weapons to fight the Kurds, in case you forgot that too. Again, to fight the Soviets, who were influencing Iran, who were believed to be using the Kurds to start a civil war in Iraq.

I know I'm old, but it wasn't that long ago... Seems we can't remember crap that happened two years ago these days, but meh, this just ticks me off.
>>
>>397686
>Where do you think Al Qaeda came from
Saudis.
>>
>>397703
Well, that's partially true as well, especially in the case of Osama himself, but we're the ones that armed and trained them through Israel throughout the 80's to fight communism, giving Osama and his ilk more aid than his Saudi funders ever did.

More than half the problems we face in the middle east today can be traced back to Reagan and Nixon, though more fundamentally the latter, given he gave us the petro-dollar that locked us into that.
>>
>>397686
a quote google search shows the quote isn't about the taliban

literally 5 seconds. Don't even care about Regan but please stop with the disinfo.
>>
>>397000
Reagan was actually a rather controversial president during his time and was criticized by both Democrats and Republicans. In hindsight, however, his presidency wasn't all bad and modern Republicans probably have a very rose tinted perspective on his tax cuts as well as his involvement in the fall of the Soviet Union.
