Did the Latin empire manage to achieve anything? And would there be any difference if Epirus got there first instead of Nicea.
Yep, sent the Byzantine Empire into a death spiral that it could not recover from
If they hadn't rebelled against the Latin emperor the empire would have been fine.
I feel like the crusaders on the 4th crusade get a horrible rep on 4chan, if you read Villehardouin's account of the events you can see they just participated in a succession struggle and the dude they put on the throne reneged on their deal because he was such a shitty ruler and couldn't pay what he owed.

Well it's more because Greeks don't pay debts, but yeah the Crusaders had no intention of even going to Constantinople before meeting Alexios Angelos, and no plans to take the city before February 1204.

doesn't help that the very first thing they did after leaving venice was to attack a christian city and get excommunicated

Reminder that the attack on Zara would have been justified under most crusading circumstances. The situation with Zara was weird because the king of Hungary was being a total faggot. The northern Adriatic was Venice's legally granted domain and all other crusading were allowed to subdue any unstable elements in their domains before taking the huge bulk of their military power out of it.
Zara had rebelled a while ago and sought support from Hungary. Meanwhile the Hungarian king had taken up the cross and promised to crusade. This is why the pope got mad. Of course, that king never crusaded and only ever used the cross as an aegis from other Christian powers, while also aggressive attacking other Christians.
tldr; Slavshits gonna slavshit
VIDF please leave
The Greek Empire would fall either way.
IMO, the best course of action would be to find some way of giving that area to the Holy Roman Emperor.
