The only reason that the Soviet Union didn't collapse under the German offensive is because the allies opened additional fronts that diverted men and materials away from the war in Russia. There were three separate occasions when the USSR was near capitulation.
They wouldn't even have been able to sustain a war effort without massive imports from the United States. All the Soviets did was bog Germany down in territories that weren't worth anything to begin with. America let the Soviets take Berlin to cut down their own casualty figures. Of course, that wound up being a massive mistake, because Germany was later partitioned.
