Was there ever are more prosperous country than Japan in the 1980s? Seemed they were going to take over the world...
>>
>>372055

And then the Asian crash happened. And they've never really recovered. Certainly not to the meteoric levels of growth they had before the crash.

I agree. Also, there's definitely a dearth of cultural/social history on this board.

Why do people love the term so much? There is more to economics and quality of life than growth

Japan is fine, the only people who don't like it are bankers who can't make easy money through speculation anymore.

take a fucking guess

I am from Japan and I hear people talk of good days of 80s and 90s (I'm 20) and I read up and it sounds like they were buying American corporations and were the main trade source. Japan was 2nd best economy in the world and was on pace to keep growing before the bubble burst
>>
>>372952
isnt much of their infrastructure and architectural style like stuck in the 80's even now because of lack of construction
>>
>>373794
What do white people smell like to you?
>>
>>372946
bcuz if growth is 0 but population goes up then there's less money per person as a result

usually that results in less quality of life if costs remain the same or even go up
>>
>>373830
>lack of construction
these are the same niggas that prefer to tear down old houses and build new ones instead of renovating.

US directly after WW2 is easily the most prosperous national of all time.

I'm not too sure about this experiment, if they start with four pairs of mice, after a while massive inbreeding would cause reproductive problems, correct?

I'm with you on that, I love cultural history

Interesting how the golden age of anime was in the '90s, where the future and technology are a major theme
Back in the '80s Japan was seen as the future. At least in the occident and cyberpunk

Why the fuck is the average Japanese worker working 80 hours a week?

I really don't understand it.
>>
>>373293
>guy on top
>bitter and dissatisfied, might as well find something else to do
>guy on the bottom
>obviously loves his job

Americans do it too. Because if we don't work ourselves to death we are lazy and will never succeed.
>>
>>374089
>Protestants logic
>>
>>374066
80 hour average? Eh I think that's pushing it

As for why - social pressure, the idea that a company's success is yours/national success, work benefits, leftover clan loyalty like in shogunate
>>
Japan is pretty limited in terms of what it can do since it's so small. Unless it pulls another Imperial Japan expansion, I don't see them doing much until China knocks on their door.

I wonder how many Japanese men were killing themselves to make the 80s happen. Must have been a stressful time.
>>
>>374135
It was also optimistic.
>>
>>374145
As the result of massive stress. Japs working 100 hour weeks, committing suicide constantly. Yeah it might be nice if you were a trust fund baby or female, but being otherwise being a Jap would blow.
>>
>>374179
females have it pretty bad in nip land too

They aren't expected to find a successful career and work until they drop dead. Their only challenge is finding a mate whose not beta as fuck.
>>
>>374212
That's a hell of a challenge
>>
>>374212
Thing is if they choose to work they can get fired for getting pregnant because the company can tell you to fuck off.

Also
>finding a non beta in nip land
Good fucking luck.

Japan still buys American corporations, they just don't brag about it anymore. Japan is the world's largest creditor nation, and it runs a huge current account surplus. Japan owns over 6% of the U.S. federal government debt.
>>
>>373830

Tokyo has more 50-story plus buildings under construction than any American city.
>>
>>376027
and yet the government has the largest GDP:Debt ratio of any developed nation. Hope that doesn't come back to bite them in the arse

I love reading about 1980s Japan. It is incredible to think how they were seen as a future economic superpower. They were buying famous skyscrapers and companies in the west, William Gibson wrote in his Cyberpunk novel "Neuromancer" how the Japanese had forgotten more about technology than the Chinese had ever learned, the total value of Tokyo's real state was said to exceed that of the entire US... and then the bubble burst and decades of stagnation and pessimism soon followed. Nowadays, Japan seems like it is stuck in the 1990s.

You can see the influence in American media pre-burst. Everything was ninjas action movies had the token samurai Japanese girl Japanese mega Corp. Look at how many movies feature a Japanese Corp in the USA. It's mind boggling how much cultural and economic influence they had in us that decade.

>>376384
Does America always need an Asian boogeyman? First it was Japan, then China, then Vietnam, then Japan, now China again. What the fuck?
>>
>>372055
>If it's too good to be true it probably is
People were predicting Brazil to be the next Japan in 1970s.
>>
>>372946
Because the predominant economic discourse privileges it over all other factors.
>>
>>376384
Japan is a tiny island country with few natural resources.

China is a huge continental country with large abundance of natural resources.

Are people really this retarded or just pretending?
>>
>>376621
>size
>natural resources
>relevant for success and prosperity
Look at Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Monaco, Switzerland...
Now look at all those big African countries with filled with oil, diamonds and ore.
What matters is how you trade and attract investiments.
>>
How did they fail again? Was it because of the Plaza Accord?
>>
>>376621
One is a stable democratic nation with strong ties to the west. The other is a formerly communist developing world authoritarian hole that has managed to alienate most of its neighbours.
>>
>>376722

What matters is the people.
>>
>>377748
>Japan
>Democracy
Taiwan and South Korea are Democracies.

China is one-state party filled with capitalists and Japan is a oligarchy masquerading as a democracy.

>Taiwan and South Korea are Democracies.
lol they were military dictatorships masquerading as a democracy up until recently now they are more like a one-party state masquerading as a democracy.
>>
It's what happens when you don't have to worry about concentrating any government interest or money in self defense. Same for Nordic countries.
>>
>>377200

There was a real estate bubble, which caused an expansion of credit because the banking system in Japan primarily depends on collateral to determine how much to lend, and when the real estate bubble burst credit had to contract with it. However, the major industrial combines all have guaranteed access to cheap money, so the export-oriented manufacturing that is the heart of Japan's economy continued to grow and grow.
>>
>>376282

There are two kinds of people: those who think fiscal debt doesn't matter and those who think trade debt doesn't matter.
>>
I wonder if cyberpunk authors are a bit bummed that China's supposed to the country of the future now, when Japan makes for such a great setting.

Bullshit.

The Nordic countries military expenditure as percentage of GDP are around 1.2%, about as much as every other Euro country, and in the middle of the ranking if you compare with other countries globally on who spends the most and least.
