What's the deal with the KKK? I don't really know much about their history, or how they operated beyond "hated black people and burned crosses". Are there any easily comparable groups in history? Did they really get btfo by a Superman comic of all things?

Started after the Civil War by disenfranchised (this requires some explaining: something like 85% of White Southern men fought for the CSA and less than 20% agreed to take the oath required to vote or hold office after the war) former confederates and Whites who felt that their rights and views were not being fairly represented by (alleged, and often actual) carpet bagger politicians and anti-Confederates who controlled the reconstruction South. This extended to defending White communities against blacks who were committing crimes mainly because they (the blacks) had no education or trade and couldn't make a living.
The original Klan was a very secret society that was supported by the majority of Southern Whites initially. Obviously, the Klan became violent towards blacks out of racism rather than pure protectionism, and many Klan members basically continued to wage a guerrilla war against the Feds.
Nathan Bedford "Kill the Negro Soldiers and Their Officers Too" Forrest, a notorious former CSA general and the first Grand Dragon of the Klan, was also the first major member to leave the Klan due to disagreeing with it's violent direction and eventually he even testified in court against it.
Over the years the Klan has died and been revived many times, primarily as a combination religious/racist/nationalist "secret" society.

A huge number of free slaves had literally no where to go, no trade or knowledge to be able to make a living, and no way to survive basically. They turned to looting, stealing, and squatting, because they had to. At the same time, the Feds basically told the Southerners:
1. You can't have local police enforcement until you are a state again
2. You're shit out of luck, we aren't here to enforce local laws.
The original Klan actually had vaguely noble intentions imho. It quickly went to absolute shit though. Viewing the freedmen who were committing huge amounts of crime as "innocent" is literally retarded. At the same time, lynching blacks for purely racist reasons is also retarded.

The Federal Government should have fucking taken responsibility for destroying an entire society by educating free blacks and providing them land (possibly out West, like a second home stead act), and enforcing the local laws in Reconstruction states.
