Well, the Old Testament is really a collection of ancient Jewish stories from times when the Jews were either fucked up or were very close to being fucked up. A lot of very old beliefs, obviously having to do with the violent nature of the world at the time.

Because he was a character used to both strike fear into the hearts of the enemies of the Hebrews and to strike fear into the Hebrews who disobeyed their leaders.

The biggest historical proof of God we have is How in the hell did a bunch of Jews occupy prime agricultural land for such a long period?
