Here's a secret rule about art. If your style is unrealistic (as all anime is) than the setting and themes should not be realistic either. Animation can do things that are impossible, or extremely expensive, compared to live action. That's why everything involves fantasy or scifi, even the romance shows have scifi and fantasy twists. It's so common you don't even think about it anymore. Did it ever occur to your that Is the Order a Rabbit has reincarnation in it? Hint, it's the thing on Chino's head.
Scifi has a very long tradition of exploring philosophical scenes (just look at Asimov) and fantasy is going to involve mythology.
