Why are there so many Slavs in modern day Europe?

It seems like they came out of nowhere. How would the dense forests and marshes in modern day eastern Poland and western Belarus support such a mass population of Slavs, who would later flood and dominate all of Eastern Europe?

How were they able to overpower the more culturally advanced Byzzies and Germanic confederations?

Aculturation

Who lived in the central Balkans before the Slavs moved in? Was it all latinized? (a la Romania)

Greeks and Germans were too busy to full scale colonize the slaivc lands, so the slavs could let civilization seep into their lands without having to submit.

German and Huns pretty much

Languages can expand without migrations. Native populations switched their languages to Slavic ones.
>>
>>365629
That usually happens when you have a conquering elite, and the masses adopt their language over time. No?
>>
>>365619
Yes it was latinized. Actually the main source for latinized troops. Huns, germanics and avars never achieved an acculturation. Slavs did, even before being the ones ruling.
>>
>>365637
It can also be the other way around, the conquerors adopting the local language. But yes.

Why would more culturally advanced people adopt the Slavic language and culture?

Was Slavcore big back then that there were many Slavaboos all over Europe then too?
>>

Ancient Roman writers couldn't differentiate Slavs with Germanics at the time because their lifestyles and cultures were so similar. There might as well be Slavs early on in the Germanic migration into the west.

How could there be Goths as far east as Slavic lands? The Goths must have assimilated many Slavs, and the Slavs assimilated many Sarmatians

And then, the Germanics got all the good land in the west and the less culturally advanced Slavs stayed more to the east

Different gods and looks though.

It would seem they were aceramic for much of their early history, so that may be why they appear to not be there in the archaeological record.

I doubt they could differentiate between Germans and Slavs just as they couldn't between Celts and Germans early on, just as how we can't differentiate all the Meds and Southern Italians nowadays.
>>
>>365726
I can differentiate Germans and Slavs fine, besides the average height they got different facial features.

Are you sure they couldn't differentiate Celts and Germans, seems the writers could.
>>

define "culturally advanced." also, when you are ruled by someone for a period of time, it doesn't really matter how "advanced" you see yourself, customs bleed down.

I was gonna shop an adidas tracksuit on some ancient slav but it's too late here.

>>365867
when slavs lived on small villages and farmsteads as opposed to germanized and latinized cultures that lived in larger, more organized towns
>>
>>365887
how many of those larger and organized and latinized and germanized towns were there in the (future) slavic lands?
>>
>>365881
let's see it

you can post it in a later thread on here or /int/
>>

You mean during the Ostiedlung? You can read about urbanization in medieval Poland, how most of the initial cities, towns, guilds, burgs, and urban settlements were started by German settlers in Poland, starting off in the wiki.

People do what their rulers tell them to

Look up genetic studies on the Balkans and Anatolia. Spoiler alert: Turks are just Greeks and Armenians even though they speak Mongol, Hungarians are just central Europeans even though they speak Finnish, and all the Slavs are basically what their immediate neighbors are.

the same way the germanics overpowered the romans

Various innovations spread to them, improvements in agriculture, trade, ironworking, horses, etcetera. Populations grew, they had more tools at their disposal, chieftains who in previous generations could only raise a few hundred tribesmen with bows, slings and javelins could now team up with other chiefs and raise 1000s of men trained to fight in the shield wall and a few specialized units like cavalry

Related: why is Lithuanian the most conservative indoeuropean language, but slavic languages are quite differnt and have lost lots of features, if they were a single balti-slavic language until after the fall of rome

I feel like this baltoslavic was not actually a cultural or linguistic group, just a general 'terra incognita'
