How does a man in our world try to become a Warrior of Justice? What philosophies come closest to that ideal? Are there any historical figures who tried to live by that standard?

Plato really. He revived the idea of concepts like justice.
In contrast the philosophy at the time were the Sophists. The sophists denied there being justice, goodness, or anything like that. They believed that all we could is appeal to emotions. They would try to demonstrate this by taking an issue and giving two arguments: one for it and one against it both equally valid. Than saying if they would say it's proof that there was no such thing as justice.

Legalism isn't even slightly just, though. Lord Shang is pretty clear that it's all about war and farming and everything else can fuck off. While it's HIGHLY meritocratic it's also highly oppressive. Music is a waste of time, culture is a waste of time, etc. Be really fucking good as a soldier or farmer and you're good. Merchants and entertainers and everyone else can go die in a fire, preferably one set by a soldier so the land they occupied can be converted to farms.
I think the closest you'll get is enlightenment philosophers. They cared a hell of a lot about justice and liberty.

Essentially it's the appeal of the childlike fascination with justice and goodness. Like seeing the world in simpler terms of black and white, but still allowing goodness in just about everyone.
