Let's talk myths/misconceptions about the French Revolution of 1789.
I'll start with some.
>The initial revolution of 1789 was meant to overthrow the king
Nope, the idea was to install a constitutional monarchy where the previous Third Estate could have an equal voice.
>Louis XVI's reign was plagued with famine
There were no famines in France during the reign of Louis XVI, just two bread shortages, once towards the beginning and one shortly before 1789, which was coupled with a really bad winter.
>let them eat cake
Sounds like French commies tbqh. No wonder America fought them.

>just two bread shortages
Baguette is a big deal in France
>>359912
I know. But there were no famines, as history text books and pop culture would have people believe. Famines are a lot more serious than bread shortages, which were (in France's case) partially alleviated by the government anyway
edgy 'reactionary' dark enlightenment sith lords think it's the worst thing in history

Double fun fact: She, in all livelihood, was never even accused of saying this in her lifetime. It doesn't show up in any of the hundreds of libelles against her from the 18th century and only started showing up sporadically in a few books in the mid-19th century. During the 20th century it ended up getting stuck to Marie Antoinette.
didn't happen

She looks pretty qt for a cake lover
The biggest myth is that it was about overthrowing the king. That's why people go "hurr it failed they just ended up with an emperor instead". Revolutionary sentiment was directed against the aristocracy, and was thus originally actually on the king's side.

Most educated people do to be desu.
Louis XVI didn't deserve to die.
>on ne peut régner innocemment
> they were atheists and hated religion
The hated Catholic church, but weren't atheists and tried to reinvent religion with in revolutionary spirit. For some time the "official religion" was cult of Reason and cult of Supreme Being.

>cult of reason

They even made a random woman their "goddess of Reason and logic". French Revolution planted the seeds of liberalism (the wrong kind) into the minds of future Europeans.

It's called an allegory you dumb fuck.
And protip: the "wrong kind" of liberalism isn't the one that relies on reason and logic.
the most popular myth is that this period of history isn't fucking lame
there is no shittier, more uninteresting, fucking boring period of time
everyone wore faggot ass wigs and looked like a twink in general

>French Revolution was only pointless slaughter
French Revolution actually directly caused French and indirectly Italian and German nationalism.
Also it popularized Democracy and Concept of Citizenship even between people who never heard about America (see Decembrist or 1848).
>>361797
It's more than that, it founded the entire modern world. It's the reason the world is divided into nation-states with constitutions and usually civil law and democratic ideals. It's the origin of every political ideology and the whole way we think of politics and governance and society itself.

>French Revolution
>Boring
Outside of Antiquity its probably the most interesting period of time
myth: the reign of terror was basically thousands of poor innocent nobles slaughtered mercilessly.
Only 8% of the people executed during the Reign of Terror were nobility. Wealthy non-nobles and regular nobility (with some exceptions, particularly those who had a very strong connection to the ancien regime) were also more likely to live long enough in prison to survive the revolution when compared to peasants.

>totally wrong. there was a huge hail storm in 1788 that destroyed crops across northern france.
Not wrong, actually. The government took action to prevent famine throughout his entire reign, including during that winter of 1788-89. This included banning the export of grain, assisting in transporting food from Versailles to Paris, etc. There was a bread shortage during the winter of 1788-89, which hit the cities especially hard because the transport of supplies to bakers and merchants into cities was difficult that winter, but no famine occurred.

The French Revolution is a hoax, and like all great hoaxes in history, it goes back to a certain tribe of Semitic origin.
I think we all know who I mean, of course.

Line battles could be very complex, commanders definitely had a lot more control over their troops than during the age of sword.
