Could the handover of Hong Kong have been avoided? I feel like this was a massive abandonment of the Hong Kong people by the British. Britain let Singapore and India etc. go because they wanted to, whereas even today the attitude in Hong Kong is they would rather be closer to Britain than China, especially among young people. So we handed the Hong Kong people over to a country they didn't want to be part of.

It was remarkable that Thatcher was in charge when the negotiations happened, probably one of her biggest displays of weakness.
>>
Seems odd considering why she didn't have a stance like that of the Falklands...
OP, look up Wargame Red Dragon. That's where it could have, and should have, led.
>>
Well theyre getting it back by 2040 soooo
>>

what?
>>
>>349243
This. I want to see the proper requirement of Britain's great land.
>tfw Britain could still have the sun shinning over their ground while they sleep at night.
>>
I thought the island had been leased and would've had to be given up eventually anyway?
>>
>>349243
Britain got hong kong for 99 years through treaties. They signed it back to China for 50.
>>
>>349269

It was 'leased' as a meme because 99 years seemed such a long time away that nobody cared to notice that that time might come, and nobody seriously believed at the time that it was just a lease. And another major thing to note is that Hong Kong island itself was actually owned by the British permanently, it was only new territories on mainland China acquired at a later date that were leased.

We never had to give Hong Kong island back along with the new territories, we just chose to to be reasonable instead of splitting up modern Hong Kong, which would have been retarded, sure. But the fact we owned some of the city gave us even more leverage to negotiate keeping it.

The island and a small portion of land was bought forever while the area around the island, the new territories, where leased later for 99 years.

The main business and important parts of HK at the time were in the island while the bedroom communities and water supply was in the new territory

The new territories would be useless without hk proper and hk proper would be useless without the new territories.

With the lease coming up china prostured as if they were willing to go to war if go proper was not returned along with the new territories and Britain folded.
>>
Because by the time the handover came China was ready to enter biggest army diplomacy with the UK.
>>
>>349276
Do you have a source on this? I thiught that HK was only allowed to be capitalist for 50 years.
>>
>>349417
This
Didn't they flat out say that they would just invade if they didn't get it?
>>
>>349568
Basically yes.
Albion was trying to be perfidious again and asked "but they have been with us for so long now, why don't we just keep things as they are" and mighty China threatned to start a war over it, so the UK just chilled out.

Chinese coolies, imported from China through Hong Kong, and also to the west, were treated worse than black slaves during the Atlantic slave trade era.

And this is all after slavery was officially abolished by Britain. And yet many Britbong ultranationalists like you still refuse to recognize the atrocities your ancestors and government have inflicted on the people of China.

>So we handed the Hong Kong people over to a country they didn't want to be part of.

Yeah the same way the South handed those negro slaves to a country they didn't want to be a part of.

KRAUT DETECTED

if it wasn't for you guys Europeans would still own the world, albeit in a more egalitarian way, and Africa might have amounted to something by now. Literally everything the British Empire has done has out weighted it's crimes.
>>
>>349906
>and Africa might have amounted to something by now

Ironic that you say this shit.
Because German colonies in Africa were the ONLY colonies in Africa that tried to make something out of the native Africans and helped build the society.
>>
>>349906
No not really.
Your are really naive.
>>
>>349987
>>349906
Actually you both are pretty stupid.
>>
>>349987
Riiiiiight, because the Germans totally never did mass exterminations in Southern Africa. Blacks could hold power, and be active in government before the inbred Afrikaaners took over SA

>both you guys are wrong n dumb :^)
>doesn't bring any evidence
>>
Actually, better question for this thread. As >>349740 said, China would start a war over this. Had Thatcher been the iron fist lady I always heard of, and declare war on China, an absolute mad woman, would the UK be able to put resources to Hong Kong only using Commonwealth supplies? (Really just UK, Canada, and Australia. No US.) I think that ought to be something to watch and see really.
>>
>>350070
Even better question: How would the fight between 1997 China and the UK and dominions (perhaps some others too) play out?
>>
>>350040
You know that the biggest park in Tanzania was made because during colonial times the Germans massacred the people who owned that land to the point they basically made it desolate and the population hasn't recovered?

In Namibia there was a rule that stated that 5-6 blacks = 1 white testimony. The people where confiscated of all cattle and land as well as made for work as forced labour for the settler population. The genocide that is basically known.
>>
>>350094
Well I dunno. Didn't the UK start disarming itself when the cold war ended? It'd be a tough fight, but really they just gotta dig in and blow bridges. Should work for a while, then, have China sue for peace. Get your best bud America in on there to put sanctions and other shit up. Fund terror groups. I don't know, but make sure that war costs them alot. And when I say alot, I mean a fucking lot.
>>
Britain should have just given back the new territories kept the island fucking over the city making it a ghost town and denying china the crown jewel of Asia.
>>
>>350143
>Being that petty.

Well it's typical for them so it's surprising that they didn't do that.
>>
>>350143
You realize that Hong Kong literally can't function without water, electricity and food supplies coming from the mainland right?

All CCP has to do is just flip a switch, and suddenly Hong Kong is dead. Shanghai becomes the new capital of Asia.
>>
>>350203
And? That's the whole point. Destroy hk to keep it from the chinks.
>>
>>350162
It's really not petty to want to keep a major asset out of your enemies hands, it's just cruel.
>>
>>350227
>to keep it from the chinks

Durrr hurr

It was already full of chinks you dumb /pol/tard
>>
>especially among young people

I keep hearing this here, on /pol/ and in the media, but when I was in Hong Kong last year a lot of people I talked to were contempt with the current situation. I think the media is blowing it out of proportion (and /pol/ is just being /pol/ as usual)
>>
>>349011
>read it as chinese goys
>>
>>350499
/pol/ loves self-hating blacks and asians

they have daily threads about racemixing with self-hating asian women
