Is the Cultural Revolution considered a catalyst for the destruction of Confucian values and politeness in modern Chinese society? All current evidence that I've seen just seems anecdotal, e.g. YouTube videos and articles.

Some links for further reading would be appreciated, thanks.

It's not unique to mainland China at all despite popular misconception.

Go to Southeast Asia, Africa, Middle East, Latin America or Eastern Europe.

Basically any country on this planet except western Europe or Japan.

Hell, even America has places full of rude people.
>>
>>343091
There's a whole bunch of theories out there that I can't really eloquently describe but the main theories I've heard are:

>Peasants too used to having to bend strict commie rules to get by so they become innately self-centered and rude because that was the only way to get what you wanted back home
>Chinese wealthy are almost all Noveau-riche assholes with no preceding standards for etiquette + Chinese culture being being on flaunting what you got

>>343110
Mainland Chinese manners are infamous worldwide. Even Chinese-majority nations like Singapore and Taiwan hate them for it.
>>
>>343119
>Mainland Chinese manners are infamous worldwide. Even Chinese-majority nations like Singapore and Taiwan hate them for it.

It's called Yellow Peril racism and it's not new. It's been around since the 1800s senpai.

If you read up anything written by white supremacists about the Chinese exclusion act or China, you'd think they were talking about modern day events.
>>
>>343126
No it's not. I actually live in Singapore senpai, this modern etiquette backlash might not be new but it's very, very real.

Maybe that's the case in the US of A, but over here in Asia there's a distinct love-hate relationship with China because we love their money but hate their asshole tourists. If you think Americans on vacation are dicks then China takes that to a whole new dimension.
>>
>>343138
>No it's not. I actually live in Singapore senpai

So you're one of them bananas?
Makes sense

>Maybe that's the case in the US of A, but over here in Asia there's a distinct love-hate relationship with China because we love their money but hate their asshole tourists. If you think Americans on vacation are dicks then China takes that to a whole new dimension.

Yeah google ugly Americans, same shit.
>>
>>343091

I thought this was a myth as well until I had to travel to Asia for two years because of work a lot of times.

They literally have special staff inside many shops i the airports that basically just spend their time making sure that the Chinese and Indians behave like human beings, especially when it comes to standing in line in stores.

If only. It''s actually gotten bad enough for China to start campaigning to curb this sort of thing.

America was like this too once upon a time.
Still like this in some ways.

Anyway, America isn't free of rude people either. Ever been to New York, Brooklyn or Los Angeles?

>Is the Cultural Revolution considered a catalyst for the destruction of Confucian values and politeness in modern Chinese society?

That and 200 years of poverty, anarchy, chaos and infighting starting with the 1800's.

Prior to that it was so fucking polite, you had specific salutes to other people's grandparents.

The Cultural Revolution placed peasants and anti-intellectuals at the top of the social ladder.

Opening up and modernizing gave them money.

So what you see today are the children of the nouveau riche of China, aided by the ease at which travel can be conducted, acting out all across the world.

Obviously this is a generalization but I would call it pretty fair.
>>
its what happens when poor people become rich very fast. they retain none of the humility and adopted none of the class.
>>
>>343091
>Is the Cultural Revolution considered a catalyst for the destruction of Confucian values
No, but Chinese (not just communists but they make the big piece of the pie) were criticizing Confucian and other traditional values even before the revolutionary period because they were so backwards. When landlords died their inheritors paid priests to divine where the most auspicious place to bury them would be, and they'd select the most ridiculous locations like in the middle of paddy fields or on the side of a cliff. And of course the Confucian civil model solidified as ineffective in selecting qualified leaders and naturally favored the rich.
>and politeness in modern Chinese society
Modern China, as in right now? Because China right now is experiencing a Confucian revival. Anyway, politeness never went away in Chinese society, just the holiness of filial piety over universal fairness and openness to criticism.

If there is a contemporary Chinese lack of politeness it's difficult to blame the GPCR when the revisionist party line is to disavow the GPCR and which looks over an increasingly liberal economy.

I'd attribute it to generation during/after Cultural Revolution and the One Child Policy.

Combination of these policies led to the rise of "Little Emperor Syndrome." Its when the single child is placed as the most important thing to the family, that attitude/coddling raised a generation of kids that are selfish and ignorant and many times even cruel.

There are people saying, the attitude existed before CCP, thats true, but only to a human degree. Every society has their own selfish people, but the CCP raised an entire generation of it. Compare them to Taiwan, which are the same Chinese descendants, but their attitude are normal and sometime very polite both externally and as a person.

Nah, I'm sure you could piss on the great wall and people wouldn't care that much. The fucking thing is massive, a little piss isn't gonna hurt it. Pissing off the wall sounds more fun anyway.
>>
>>346327
Mongolians got away with it for thousands of years. A little more can't hurt.
>>
My family is Chinese, but had to flee to Taiwan when Mao took over. Generally, we see stark differences in everyday culture between us and the Mainlanders. The Cultural Revolution isn't the only culprit, many Chinese traditions fell apart during the decline of the Qing and subsequent ROC/warlord period. It's sad to say, but many aspects of Chinese culture can be seen more in Korea or Japan than modern China.

Still, some parts of Chinese culture have been retained better by people like my grandparents who fled to Taiwan, and some parts the Mainlanders have taken good care if.. But things like politeness and courtesy are a foreign concept to Mainland Chinese, although I should be fair and point out that younger Chinese are much, much more polite than the older generations. The generation of Chinese that grew up during the Cultural Revolution can be really uncouth.

However, Chinese history is really fucking long. We don't exactly know if Chinese traditions were lost upon dynasties replacing one another or Mongol or Manchurian rule displacing time honored values. I wouldn't be surprised if somehow the "lost" values return to China, whether naturally or part of some nationalist program to instill pride.

Nor did I imply that their racial trait was the cause of high crime, sexual violence, low education and poor health. My limited example was if you take a perennial underclass of a society and have them effectively mug everyone else that is a good illustration of what happened during the Cultural Revolution.

true, my point is china is no worse or better than the west and trying to blame Mao for all of Chinese culture's problems is pretty ridiculous, .
>>

No one blamed mao for all of Chinese culture problems. His policies however greatly caused the current mainland Chinese problem.

I'd say 90% Mao, 10% environment. Of the generation, there's still some small percentage that still has their humanity.
>>
>>346586
>there's still some small percentage that still has their humanity.
What would cause you to post such a thing?
is this a cleverly disguised China hate thread?
Mao if anything tried to make things better with policies to stop the abuse of the plebs by the feudal lords. sadly the feudal lords have come back with a vengeance. Now they spend their ill gotten gains on treating foreigners the same way. Not all though, most of the Chinese students at my uni are nice people.

>>
It's more like a 150 years old process of degrading traditional value of humbleness and modesty (that had been seen as a defect instead of simply a kind of personality) due to the westernization. But it went too far.
>>
Confucianism was a court ettiquete and as a way of life it was pretty much confined to the court, even if the ethos permeated China under good dynasties and circumstances. The Qing dynasy collapsed in like 1911, and it had been in decline for a while. There was nobody keeping the old Imperial ettiquete alive, largely because there was no Imperial court anymore and the country was undergoing warlordism.
Meanwhile the Nationalist government was importing Western ideas by the ton and trying to modernize what little it controlled. Japanese colonialism was happening. China was basically without any apparatus both able and willing to espouse Confucianism as an end itself. The li may have survived among the people, but with no Emperor and no Empire, and when the states were warring, how could Heaven smile on the land and keep Confucianism alive?
Oddly enough Mao had the Mandate of Heaven and proved this by being the most powerful Chinese leader since Qin Shi Huang. But Confucianism was gone long before the Cultural Revolution happened.

my course has a module on recent Chinese history but im not a expert

there's been a revival in Confucian studies which means the Chinese state is letting that get taught, nothing goes without their say so, thats why so many young people in China don't know much about the Tianamin Square massacre.

Anyways the Western idea is that the Chinese state wants Confucian ideals to return in slight because Confucianism forbids change to an extent and focuses on the study of the elders, now that Communism China is the 'old wise man' he wants its children to follow suit, previously Confucianism was shunned because Chinese people looked towards pre-Communist values, but now that was so long ago that it falls into Communist history

Thats what my articles said anywas, I think its rather interesting

There's also the military salute that is specific among military men, which is the fist covered by a palm salute. It also has a certain ettiquette due to its meaning: fist = strength, palm = wisdom that handles strength.

Therefore, when saluting with a weapon, the palm ought to cover over the hand that grasps a weapon.
