It's already been happening; automation replacing factory workers, self checkout. Now a replacement for cashiers is on its way, as would any competition in the manufacturing market as 3D printing becomes more viable. Google's self driving cars could do away with transportation jobs. Surgery is starting to get robotic help.
These are all job markets that could be replaced in the foreseeable future. We'll have to get more creative about wealth distribution in the future if this trend picks up. Our system of redistribution isn't used to an economy that can sustain itself without a shit ton of labor.

I'm not entirely convinced it was socialism that deterred the British people from voting Labour for so long, but the general weakness of their leaders between Wilson and Blair.
