He's a living demonstration as to why government power is more destructive then corporate power. His policies prolonged the depression and he out and out intimidated the supreme court by threatening to increase the number of judges from nine to eleven because they kept shooting down his legislation.

Oh, and let's not forget...

These people lost everything that they owned, had their lives frozen in place for four years and still volunteered en masse to go punch fascism in the dick.

do you have any good recommended reading/documentary on getting to know this stuff better? I'd always heard how it didn't fix anything, but just kinda froze us in place from getting any worse and WW2 was what ended up saving us.
>>

>>
>>340871
Not him, but if you want to know why FDR is full of shit from a different perspective try Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, & the Great Depression by Alan Brinkley.

Among other things: FDR basically made it illegal to practice local, non-corporate banking.

He did his best to kill social security.

He had a habit of fucking destroying towns.

The worst part is that FDR wasn't some reformer dragging America into caring about it's poor against the wishes of the wealthy. He was a tyrant who used government authority to cement corporate power, and only faced serious opposition from the economic left his entire career.
>>
>>340871
Further, all the presidents before him were set on doing nothing to get out of the depression. His office presided over its end.
Further, it was another liberal who started curbing the "great recession" soooo
So far: liberals vs conservatives are 2:0 on economic crises.
Explain first anon, please.

>Further, all the presidents before him were set on doing nothing to get out of the depression
This is untrue. In fact, in his first electoral campaign he criticized Hoover for spending far too much to deal with the depression.

The charges of Hoover 'doing nothing' were in the areas of foreign trade. That got changed via a game of telephone to be about government spending to serve current political debates.

>So far: liberals vs conservatives
Anon, the Conservative movement in America did not exist until the 1940s, and liberals as we know them didn't really either.

m8 the great depression didn't really end until WWII. This was only because so many men were sent to war and the women and men left behind had a massive war effort undertaken by the government to keep them employed. Then all of the other industrial competitors of the area got bombed to shit and our wartime manufacturing centers were able to be utilized by private industry. FDR's New Deal didn't solve the depression, maybe just staved off some symptoms. Agreed, and I feel like this will continue to be a huge problem for the US in the future. We can have a strong economy and poor labor participation as technology continues to replace jobs. It's already been happening; automation replacing factory workers, self checkout. Now a replacement for cashiers is on its way, as would any competition in the manufacturing market as 3D printing becomes more viable. Google's self driving cars could do away with transportation jobs. Surgery is starting to get robotic help.
These are all job markets that could be replaced in the foreseeable future. We'll have to get more creative about wealth distribution in the future if this trend picks up. Our system of redistribution isn't used to an economy that can sustain itself without a shit ton of labor.
Inb4 someone says all our low paying jobs went to China and Indonsia. I recognize that as a reason too, but not one that will last. China is about to loose its labor force thanks to their one child policy. And 3D printing would create goods that would make their role obsolete anyway.

taking direct control of the army for one. the worst decision ever made because it put all responsibility for the direction of the war on himself. he also dissolved the duma when all the parties came together to form a national unity coalition. he also prevented the coordination of industry by patriotic united front like in france and britain cause he feared social unrest.

>>345360
>Their culture requires strong secularist leaders like Assad and Gaddafi.
you might be right, but in the end every single secular dictator has failed to a t to modernize their countries without explosive social unrest or committing some blunder that fucked them over. even if the West didn't aid the rebels against qaddafi or assad, the revolts in those two countries had their own momentum. we're talking about brutal regimes so the fact that they kept spreading as the government crackdowns got crueler says a lot about their failures as leaders.

Giving the masses access to public wealth is the most retarded thing.
Handing bottomless bag of candy to a baby is what it us
>>
>>348643
What about creating wealth for the masses?

>Chile 1920: Country is a shit hole. Government is a parliamentary regime under the control of the eurofags. All exploiting endlessly the saltpeter for their gunpowder. Then, a republican president begins pushing for reforms and investment in the economy; he's a liberal conservative, and wants to apply market policies on the nation to create new sources of wealth to replace the dying saltpeter.

Then comes general Ibañez, a brilliant military man and dictator. He sizes control of the nation first from the parliamentary fags ad then from the president himself after he forces all ministers to resign; making him the defacto ruler of chile.(btw; he was not against president alessandri, he just thought he could do a beter job)

He governs with a socially minded policy; focusing the building of the state over politics (after all he's the dictator). He strengthens the previously gay executive powers into a decent government. He conglomerates police corps into a Sort-of-Military-Police that is the Police of Chile up to this day (Carabineros de chile).

The Crack of 29' Fucks up the economy too soon (Chile was the Most affected Nation IN THE WORLD by the 29' Crash). And the guy manages to keep the nation from collapsing by using fiscal stimulus. (if the oligarchs had remained chile would have collapsed).

He Fucks up by letting Proto-Neo-Liberals into the country who proceed to apply economical "reforms" that make shit worse. He quits in july 26 and the country falls into some strange kind of anarchy where several socialist republics and military juntas pass on the leadership for no more than a few months (one of them lasting less than a day).

Alessandri is ellected again; but he's no idiot, he know the country needs stimulus. (the oligarchs left the country during 1932's socialist republic). (1/2)
>>
>>348728
So he rules with an iron fist while mantaining the country's stability to regain foreign investment.

It al goes well until in 1938 a group of nazis get massacred at the office of the worker's insurance. That shifts opinion just before the ellection, allowing the popular front to win the ellection after Ibañez; (who was going for a second run on the government and had HUGE support from the popular masses) renounces to his claim.

Popular front's candidate was a teacher (Pedro Aguirre Cerda). He Finances the Building of the infrastructure for the building of a smart populace (which would have serious concequences later) and faces a huge earthquake (7,8) that allows the government to justify Massive investments in the construction of infrastructure nationwide.

CORFO is a government agency created during his mandate that becomes the MAIN source of investment for the industrialization of the country.

But all plans are cut short after he gets tuberculosis and dies halfway through his mandate.

Juan Antonio Ríos gets ellected as the next guy in 1942. He declares war on the axis; and continues the Industrialization program. he goes on to become THE Main Industrialization project of the nation ever. Here is where the division between the Left (Pro-Communist) and right (Anti-Communist) begins to surface.

He's the guy that despite the war (Low trade since all nations who would buy are at war) Turns a emminently agricultural nation into a regional power.

Next guy fucks shit up. Gabriel Gonzales videla outlaws the Communist party (who were his allies) due to the cold war. Shit hits the fan, Protests start and Carlos ibañes makes the return.

He is ellected as president and is the last guy to build industry. He begins to notice the rise of inflatio; so he decides to support a new reform in commerce. but it does not work as well as he expected because it requires too many thing that go against his populist government. 2/3

After failing to do enough for the economy he ends his mandate in 1958 not before derogating the law that proscribed the communist party.

Populist as he was; meant that he had become a good friend of Perón; even mantaining a plan to ensure that his government were never to fail; by virtue of sending the argentinean army to reclaim Chile for Ibañez; but after Perón died it all ended.

Alessandri makes a new comeback; and focuses on the Administration side of the country. Although Right wing; he focuses on thechnocrat policies to improve the Economy by virtue of Efficiency (as opposed to mere privatization).

All starts well, economy starts to rise and then 1960 happens. a few very close quakes shake the nation and then... Valdiva gets hit by a 9.5 Earthquake that remains as the biggest Earthquake the modern world has seen.

The us offers help, and JFK determines that it will come as part of the "Alianza para el progreso" program. This enables Alessandri to apply a land reform to utilize lands that although on private hands are not being exploited.

Before he could apply the last stage of his ideological plan he gets boycoted by the radical party (Gonzalez videla's party) that screws shit up.

Ellections come and an event shapes the history of chile forever: "El naranjazo" occurs after a municipal ellection happens a few months befor the ellection: a Major dies and needs to be replaced. Ellections choose a Communist in what was a previously Right wing district.

Everyone panics and the right wing decide to support the Center party "Democracia cristiana"
(Christian democracy / Social conservatism).

THESE ARE THE AWESOME GUYS. Finally a rational government not-communist not-oligarchist not-populist arrives.

Eduardo Frei Montalva is ellected and his history is AWESOME. he was an activist since school; even creating the party that would come to represent the actual face of chile: Falange Nacional. 4/5

After a reformation under his guide hand it becomes the Christian Democratic Party and it becomes the winner of the love of the nascent middle class of chile. (No person with a descent income wants communism unless he has a mean to achieve conrol of it).

They do great stuff; Basically acting as a Viable "Third way" between Comunism and Capitalism.

(btw, Half of his candidacy was financed by JFK's US due to his potential to establish a Peaceful Social Government instead of the Socialist government of Allende that looms since 1952).

"Promoción Popular" (Social Promotion), "Reforma Agraria" (Agrarian Reform), "Reforma Educacional" (Education Reform), and "Juntas de Vecinos" (Neighborhood Associations) were some of his main projects. These shaped Chilean society in ways you guys would never imagine!

His Financial and Social Progressive reforms Did not cause a fear in the Wealthy due to the simple fact that he wasn't a socialist. So he raised taxes, built schools and hospitals, he carried out projects in areas like housing, education, reforestation, land reform, health, and the nationalization of copper.

The most important thing was that he focused on giving responsability and power to the comunities rather than the state. Mothers’ centres, sports associations, youth clubs, residents’ committees, and parents’ groups proliferated, with an estimated 20,000 units of this type in existence by 1970, according to government figures.

The problem: Military guys wanted power. Since Ibañez, All General saw themselves as possible dictators or rulers. So Military Demonstrations started to ocurr in the capitol.

Military men threathening to go on a coup for the sake of power. The fears lasted untill the ellections of 1970 where allende won and Everybody collectively lost their shit as the first Marxist Democratically ellected president took control of the nation.

Against common knowdlege allende was not very different than Frei. 5/6

He was a moderate, and a major player in the politis of chile since the 30's (when he co-founded a faction of the scocialist party).

He ran chiean economy through Keynessian politics and nationalization programs while also applying a Massive Land reform and a campaign against illiteracy and a housing program.

No "Collectivisation" or authoritarianism ocurred during his government despite it happening in all others. He was the most democratical president of Chile EVER.

Evidence shows that project FUBELT of the CIA worked behind the shadows with President Nixon to Boycott the Economy.

A CIA backed strike (1972) paralyzed the production and distribution of materials and food. Despite this the president did not use the armed forces to break the strike; Causing the economy to keep at a poor rate.

Then in 1973 a coup took the government. The military junta that followed killed and tortured thousands of innocents in his communist and dissents purges; including Frei and Nobel Prize poet Neruda.

"The most prevalent forms of state-sponsored torture that Chilean prisoners endured were electric shocks, waterboarding, beatings, and sexual abuse. Another common mechanism of torture employed was “disappearing” those who were deemed to be potentially subversive because they adhered to the Leftist doctrine. The tactic of “disappearing” the enemies of the Pinochet regime was systematically carried out during the first four years of military rule. The "disappeared" were held in secret, subjected to torture and were often never seen again. Both the National Commission on Political Imprisonment and Torture (Valech Report) and the Commission of Truth and Reconciliation (Rettig Report) approximate that there were 35,000 victims of human rights abuses in Chile, with 28,000 tortured, 2,279 executed and 1,248 “disappeared.”" (Wikipedia on Human rights violations on chile).

>tries to pack the court
I agree it was unprecedented. but ultimately he failed and the system held. the founding fathers literally created a weak presidency, confirmed by washington's precedent. so this is less of a story of a president with aspirations for greater power (which they all have) than a story of the success of the checks and balances. anyway, presidents had used executive decrees to strengthen the presidency since mckinley and theodore roosevelt.

>He also made the US a war time fascist state

Well what about the fact that he agreed to run a national vote to ratify his legitimacy just before the coup. (Literally the day before).

He also disarmed the revolutionary radical groups to avoid a civil war and did not resort to violence to ensure stability like ALL CHILEAN PRESIDENTS BEFORE HIM DID.

He was Literally the most democratical president to that date.

>Although he liked Maximilian on a personal level,[38] Juárez refused to commute the sentence in view of the Mexicans who had been killed fighting against Maximilian's forces, and because he believed it was necessary to send a message that Mexico would not tolerate any government imposed by foreign powers. Felix Salm-Salm and his wife masterminded a plan and bribed the jailors to allow Maximilian to escape execution. However, Maximilian would not go through with the plan because he felt that shaving his beard to avoid recognition woud ruin his dignity if he were to be recaptured.[39] The sentence was carried out in the Cerro de las Campanas on the morning of 19 June 1867, when Maximilian, along with Generals Miramón and Mejía, were executed by a firing squad. He spoke only in Spanish and gave his executioners a portion of gold not to shoot him in the head so that his mother could see his face. His last words were, "I forgive everyone, and I ask everyone to forgive me. May my blood which is about to be shed, be for the good of the country. Viva Mexico, viva la independencia!".[40] Generals Miramón and Mejía were shot after him. Both died shouting, "Long live the Emperor."

I'm not entirely convinced it was socialism that deterred the British people from voting Labour for so long, but the general weakness of their leaders between Wilson and Blair. We follow strength over views in this country it seems, hence why leaders like Kinnock and Miliband ought to have won due to the unpopularity of the Tory party at the time and their impressive poll ratings pre election but lost last minute due to seeming weak and ineffective where it counts.

Benn had the charisma and the intellect to have routed that system. Maybe he wouldn't have smashed Thatcher, maybe he would have folded to the tabloid machine like the others did, maybe he was too left for the country really, but I don't think there was anyone better to stand up and give it a shot. Not many other people are as adored as he was in British politics.
