And what was Roosevelt's interest in putting a stop to it?

From the Russian army perspective, here's an excerpt from Bruce Menning's "Bayonets Before Bullets"

Technological shell shock remember how awful Austria-Hungary was at adapting to WW1? that's what happened to Russia in this one
>>
Russians were getting their asses kicked and Japs were bankrupt. Both sides wanted the war to end but needed to preserve face.

Roosevelt was brought in as the middleman and got a Nobel peace prize for it.

Horrible logistics. I mean, Russian Far East is still fucking hard to reach even these days.

Laughably obsolete fleet opposing new foreign-made Jap one.

Generals like Kuropatkin were pretty much not fit for their positions. Hell, a lot of battles lost by Kuropatkin were simply him running away further than Japs did.

Revolution breaking out.

Someone post that copypasta about the Russian fleet that blew itself up several times on the way to Japan.

There's a lot of factors.

-Russian Far East has piss-poor communication and transportation. Orders from St. Petersburg could take weeks to reach the front, leaving the Russian military fighting with a good month-long handicap on receiving anything from military orders to reinforcements.

-Port Arthur is hardly defensible, especially when completely surrounded by Japan by sea and China by land. It's amazing it held out for as long as it did. And receiving even local orders from Port Arthur was a gauntlet because the city was under siege for the entire duration of the war.

-To understand the battle of Tsushima. you need the full story. Russia didn't have the Naval firepower available to take on the Japanese with the Pacific Fleet alone, so they had to make the Baltic fleet make the entire journey from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok, a journey that took a full year to accomplish.

In order to get to Vladivostok, the ENTIRE Russian fleet had to slip past the Tsushima strait, completely controlled by the Japanese undetected in order provide support to the Pacific fleet just past the strait.

Only problem, was, that the Russian hospital ship kept its lights on in the night, as required by international law at the time, and didn't douse the lights to slip through safely. The Japanese caught the Russian fleet trying to slip through, and attacked it from all sides, which turned into a shooting gallery that the Russian fleet couldn't defend against. Ending the war.

"In the night, thick fog blanketed the straits, giving the Russians an advantage. At 02:45 Japan Standard Time (JST), the Japanese auxiliary cruiser Shinano Maru observed three lights on what appeared to be a vessel on the distant horizon and closed to investigate. These lights were from the Russian hospital ship Orel, which in compliance with the rules of war, had continued to burn them."

Roosevelt played the peace maker and furthered American prestige as a world power. He preserved a balance of power. As Japan was in no position to win a land war with Russia just lost the naval war. So they were at impasse as Vultures looked on.

Taking Russia down a peg by watching the Japs kick their ass, but stopping it before Japan got too badass and started taking out American interest in the pacific.

He pretty much predicted Japan vs US in WW2

Russian logistics were terrible, especially once the Japanese took out the Russian navy.

Why wouldn't they just sail the hospital ship through separately?
