Does Christopher Columbus deserve to be as vilified as he is today?
>>
Absolutely not
>>
>>33258

why not
>>
>>33239

Was he a brave explorer who falsified the size of the globe as smaller than it was so he could get the OK to explore unknown waters, or a fool who thought he really could sail to eastern Asia over Atlantic?
>>
>>33239
Not really
>>
>>33370
He really thought he could sail around the world, nobody knew about America. Native Americans are called Indians because he thought he was in India, and there was an Arabic translator in his company.
>>
>>33239

Ask the Taino.

That being said, people who mock him for being a shitty explorer are just being petty.
>>
>>33239
Nope.

He was not that bad of a person for the standards of his time, so seeing him through the biased lenses of modern ethics doesn't make sense and gives him more shit than he deserves.
>>
no, for some reason he either has to be either this ingenious explorer or a cartoon villain, no nuance is allowed
>>
>>33239
>That being said, people who mock him for being a shitty explorer are just being petty.
I disagree considering the faggot didn't even spot land himself.

Yes, OP. Yes he does.
>>
Yeah. He was like, a really evil person and there's no real way to refute that.
>>
>>33679
Nah, he was the guy that sold little native girls into prostitution.
>>
shit anybody who wants to downplay Columbus better fucking at least know this:

I always find it amusing how apologists say the conquerors are being judged by 21th century morals, when the Catholic church of the time up to the pope were utterly outraged at the treatment of the natives.
>>
Absolutely not. Millennials shit on him just to be edgy and cute.
>>
>>33239
Yea, he was a mad cunt
>>
He was a genuinely horrible guy but then again it's not like later conquistadors and settlers were all that better. Gets a disproportionate share of blame because he came first.
>>
>>33239
He was a disgusting human being who committed many atrocities.
>>
no. the whole columbus hate thing is a fucking meme that didn't exist till social media
>>
>>35676
I recall reading a picturebook from the 80s that pretty much painted him as a villein
>>
>>35579
Furthermore, Americans do not reserve the right to criticize Christopher Columbus as they profit off of his handiwork. Saying "boo hoo Columbus was le evil man!1!11" while more or less leeching off his accomplishments is just ridiculous. He did some not-so-nice things, but so did many other historical figures that at the end of the day bettered the world.
>>
>>33318
The natives were savages and in need European colonization. He's only made to be so awful because of all the "muh culture" shitheads who run the public schooling system.
>>
>>33239
should be worse, he was a genocidal piece of shit
>>
>>35740
>not-so-nice
Fuck off, he did both good/impressive things, and incrdibly ATROCIOUS things, painting someone all good or all bad is stupid.
>>
>>36516
always me:

Over all his action prove that he was quite a capable leader, an ambicious and strong willed man who achieved great things, but also an absolute disgusting monster regarding humanity and empathy.
>>
>>36516
Who the fuck painted him as all good? He didn't need to be good. He's not fucking Jesus. What he did made the world a better place for all but one group of people, no matter how "atrocious". Suck it up.

He never held a gun to anybody's head saying, "Kill those fucking Natives, it'll be hilarious". Demonizing him is ignorant.
>>
>>35740

The hypocritical thing about liberals is how they completely shit on the Columbus/American colonization narrative while doing absolutely nothing about it.

We always talk about reparations for slavery, but we never give a second thought to the indigenous people who were shoved into fucking reserves like animals, where they remain to this day.

Surely changing the name of a holiday like it's en memoreum and not for a group that's still extant will make it all better.
