How did humans domesticated dogs?

Why dont we have pet bears or lions today?

We have much better understantment and bigger knowledge, better technology could we domesticate them today using violence, technology or just "love??

>Why dont we have pet lions today?

For the same reason we don't have ridable zebras
It takes a minimum of intelligence to domesticate an animal specie, and the human who remained in Africa after the "out of Africa" part (also known as "blacks") stopped evolving and are thus still at the early stage of human evolution (not capable of domestication)

You can get a pet bear or lion if you're willing to pay for it. Especially in terms of food would cost you a fortune. And there's always some risk they could snap and kill you.

We do have pet lions, they're called, well, cats. Bears, that's a different story, they're propably just way too strong for people from bygone eras to domesticate.

>lions only ever existed in africa

A pet lion or polar bear would take a lot of money and effort, it's not like you can keep them in your house, but it does happen. Arabs do it all the time when they get that dank oil money and start buying mental pets.

Wolves became domesticated because we were incredibly compatible and didn't need to put much effort into it. The wolves got scrap food in return for providing camp security.

On topic, we don't domesticate them because.. Why would we?

Dogs domesticated themselves.

It works out like this:
>Wolves start eating scraps left behind by humans
>Start living closer to humans to get easy to access food
>Humans most likely attack and try to scare away wolves

The interesting bit:
>Certain percentage of wolves have smaller adrenal glands
>Smaller adrenal glands leads to less stress when around humans, allows for mating around humans
>Smaller adrenal glands from mating pairs, higher percentage of mating around humans
>Also leads to permanent puppy like features seen in modern dogs

>After generations humans and dogs tolerate each others presence, start working together to get food, dogs alert humans to danger, etc.

This is the real reason we don't have domesticated zebras >>331248.

Current theories suggest dogs domesticated themselves as much as humans humans had a role in domesticating them.

Basically they followed us around and the tamest ones got more food and survived whereas the wilder ones didnt

Why would we domesticate something with unuseful parameters? Apex predators are too dangerous to bother with.

How? National Geographic recently did a piece on domesticating foxes. Short answer: you get some babies, raise them, kill the ones that don't get with the program, breed the ones that do. It's a project that can be accomplished within a single human lifetime, so odds are we did it multiple times.
