I don't know if it's ever been done in real life. The shit you sometimes see in movies where the captors put you next to another person's cell and they become your friend. Then after a long time it's revealed the other person was actually the captors. That shit is heartbreaking.
It's not a pain-based torture, but I think it's up there when it comes to psychological shit.
