Is a "Communist state" an oxymoron? Isn't a state antithetical to pure communism? Also isn't communism an economic system, not a political one?
That's like establishing a "Christian state" even though Jesus never advocated a kingdom on earth but rather promised one in heaven. How did communists justify establishing communist states?
The state becomes a revolutionary apparatus that 'manages' the transition from capitalism/monarchy/whatever into 'pure communism.' Usually this just means killing people.

They were officially socialist (and socialist autocracies in practice) as in Marx's stage of development
Hence in domestic propaganda they were always "building towards communism"
and yes, it is an oxymoron because communism = no state

yeah but communism dont specify anything on how a political system should be. Check out the communist manifesto, you wont find any political recipe ; is all about economy and material stuff.

For many socialists the state can be, and needs to be, seized by the proletariat and utilized towards their own ends for inter-communal organization. The anarchist leaning side disagreed with this but I think the idea makes a lot of sense when you consider that when a worker's revolution happens it is always surrounded by imperial and capitalist powers that are already established, organized, and ready to (if not actually) smash the revolution and install some puppet regime in its place. Consider the Paris Commune.
The state in the USSR existed to bring about the full unimpeded motion of History through totalitarianism.
People soon realized that this made no fucking sense, and that they were stuck with one of the most oppressive regimes in the history of man.
