Priapus is best god.jpg
349 KB, 1135x1024
Priapus is best god, aside from Mercury.
He was a god of fertility and live stock, and is always shown as having an erect penis.
The medical term "priapism", which involves having an erection that refuses to subside is derived from, and can be traced back to him. His following was cultish and small, often revered by farmers. Most of his fame came from the mocking and obscene "Priapeia" which tells of his exploits and erotic adventures.

Thoughts?

Threadly reminder that the Roman Pantheon and Religion was a distinct evolution of Indo-European Pantheon that existed before Hellenic Influence, and not simply Greek Mythology with different names.

Thank you.

I wish fertility gods existed today.
Their patrons saints and nuns would be slutty as fuck.

Ancient Romans followed Etruscan practices called "disciplina etrusca" this involved the inspection of internal organs of sacrificial animals, or the flight patterns of birds, was therefore an expression of the divine will, and contained a message which could be interpreted by trained priests called "Augurs"

It may have been the fact that Etruscan religious beliefs and practices were so deep-rooted among the Romans that led to the complete destruction of all Etruscan literature as a result of the advent of Christianity. Arnobius, one of the first Christian apologists, living around 300CE, wrote ,"Etruria is the originator and mother of all superstition"

Even before Christianity, the Romans considered the Etruscans to be zealots who thought all natural phenomena were caused directly by the Gods.

Also, Interest in Etruscan Culture waned long before Christianity came to dominate Rome. It was barely considered by the time Claudius compiled his Etruscan dictionary.

Where are the two distinctly different?
>>
>>321505
Around the time the Italic branch split off of what would become the Greek branch.

Roman Paganism also has influence from the non-Indo-European Etruscans, so there's that. Saturn, for example, was a totally distinct figure with no relation to Chronus.

Heathen! Do you prefer to live a life of chaos created by a perfect God or a secure life created by an imperfect man?

All of the above

Well, the obvious ones are the gods which don't exist in the Greek Pantheon, like Janus, but if you look at the Religions as a whole, you see that the Roman Gods are actually much more immaterial than the Greek ones.

Jupiter isn't just a guy who sits on a mountain, he's much more supernatural and has to be summoned to the Earthly real as opposed to Dios who just kind of roams around the World fucking bitches.

Also, some genealogies are different, as Jupiter and Juno are actually twins and not really the children of Saturn.

Saturn is another example of a difference, as he isn't simply Kronos: Saturn doesn't fear being usurped, nor did he violently usurp Caelus.

There is no Titanomachy in the Roman myth either.

As time grew on, the Romans became increasingly Hellenized and Roman Religion and myth started to intentionally mold itself onto the Greek ones, and Ovid simply took stories of the Greek gods and changed their names to the Roman ones.

The Romans basically destroyed their own culture to copy another's.

People like Cato the Elder spoke out against Greek influence, but he more or less fell upon deaf ears in that regard.

Question:

Were people's dicks weirdly shaped back then? I know they were smaller. But all the drawings of erect dicks look so weird.

Do you prefer the God that killed man? Or became man to die for their own creation?

Since large dicks were seen as comical back then, it wouldn't be unlikely that Priapus, a comical figure, would also be depicted with some kind of deformity, like phimosis.

This is greek, obviously, but you can see it's depicted more realistically here.

What literature is out there detailing the Greek and Roman pantheons separately?
>>
>>321678
I wish I knew, bruh.

It all gets banded under "Classical" mythology. I guess you'd need to be a classics major to get into the major differences.

I got a joke for you...so one guy says to his friend, is this a coincidence or what? The friend replies, what is? Guess who my usual asian hooker turned out to be? the waitress at my now favorite asian spot. The buddy says, yeah some women are like that. They love the life of service. By day they serve you a plate and at night they love serving you the full course of the other platter.
>>
>>321694
It's really a shame how history depicts them as being one and the same. The few works I've read on the subject were just the Greek myths with parenthesized Roman names

Since the Roman Gods were less like humans than the Greek ones were, there aren't as many catchy Myths associated with them like Hercules Zeus' many romps with mortal women, but there are some myths.

One of the best known are the Myth of the Roman rites where the Second King of Rome summoned Jupiter and bargained for what is and what isn't to be sacrificed to the Gods and managed to get Human sacrifice off the table.

Then, the polemic Third King of Rome tried to demonstrate Pompilian piety, but fucked up the summoning ritual and was smitten for his transgression.

That shows the nature of Jupiter to the Early Romans. He was more of a transcendent deity as opposed to the very anthropomorphic Zeus.

Many Roman Deities characterize more abstract concepts like that. Take Janus who represents the impetus for transition.

Historically, there's no better way of getting a person killed than by telling a greek someone is a demi-god.
>>
>>321844
they went to alexander and said, alexander, there's a living demi god in india with many faces and avitars. he/she never dies...the greeks invaded but couldn't follow through...some even stayed. Apparently the hindu God kept making more avatars of itself, over and over again.
