What /his/ books are you reading?
What /his/ books do you recommend?
History and other humanities both welcome, we're all brothers here.

I'm currently reading the Landmark Herodotus, a big fat brick of the Histories with annotations from historians, translators and geographers, crammed full of maps and with a good inch of appendices explaining the historical context of every facet of what Herodotus talks about, along with his inaccuracies. Apparently there are equivalent editions of Thucydides and Xenophon as well.

Along with this, I recommend David Howarth's The Voyage of the Armada, which details the Spanish side of the Anglo-Spanish conflict of 1588. It's the best book I've read on the subject, but also the only one, so I welcome any objections to it.
>>
I've just ordered Polybius' Histories (Oxford World's Classics Edition) and I'll soon order Plutarch's Lives (Complete Modern Library Edition). Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War (Oxford World's Classics Edition) arrived yesterday.
>>
>>317553
Nice! Are you doing the Greek history train too?

Also, how are those Oxford editions? I've got a copy of Tacitus I haven't yet opened.
>>
I haven't read much history but Anthony Everitt's Cicero: The Life and Times of Rome's Greatest Politician was excellent
>>
Well-written, balanced, informative, albeit a little bit dated by now, it's still a great introductory book for Ukrainian history. I'm on 19th century and Galicia now (and my edition is different too but whatever).

Fuck me is it depressing in a lot of places, though, but that's not the author's fault.
>>
>>317665
Do you think it would be better to read a good history on Russia before tackling this?
>>
>>317633
I've 'Started with the Greeks' and I've read A Brief History of Ancient Greece by Pomeroy and others, Herodotus' Histories (Oxford version, not as good as Landmark but it was a great experience), Thucydide's Pellopenesian War (same as Oxford in terms of Oxford/Landmark), and I've just ordered Kagan's Pellopenesian War. I read their /lit/ as well, still reading through Plato (he wrote a lot).

Oxford Edition's are great tho mate, good intros, notes etc -- Landmark are better for the histories however, but more expensive.
>>
Just started this (inb4 /pol/)
>>
>>317769
What's supposedly /pol/ about it?
>>
>>317778
Its central thesis is that darwinian selection during the middle ages made western europeans better than everyone else.
>>
>>317761
I've got Thucydides, Xenophon, Arrian and Polybius lined up after Herodotus, and then I'm unsure if I should switch to the Romans or look into Greek history within the Roman Empire, which would take me up to Byzantium one way or another.

Persian history also seems worth looking into, are there any central texts as far as that goes?
>>
>>317785
I can see how that would rustle feathers. I'd argue that political strife is largely what propelled the region to dominance, as each little kingdom and nation-state was in constant competition with their neighbors.
>>
>>317542
Just finished The Ottoman Centuries a while ago, while it does have a certain pro-british outlook and a massive boner of Lord Stratford Canning its a pretty good history of the ottoman empire from start to finish
>>
>>317721
Definitely no if you want to learn Ukrainian history specifically; and even with the history of the region Subtelny gives just enough background for you not to get lost.

Ukraine in pretty much all Russian history books is written in a completely fucking ridiculous fashion:

>Kievan Rus
>Then the small principalities broke up
>Then Kingdom of Halych-Volhynia is covered in brief
>Then out of nowhere cossacks
>Then literally fucking nothing, even Ukrainian Independence War of 1917-1920 isn't covered at all

That, and Subtelny gives a lot of the time to disprove some of the more popular Soviet historical myths. One can think it's useless and outdated by now but they're still clearly present in Russian mind and pop history.
>>
>>317816
>popular Soviet historical myths
Example?
>>
>>317816
i get a lot of history books free on Librivox, listened to A History of Russia from the Remotest Period to the Present Time a while back and found it pretty interesting. the early history of the region and constant backstabbing and betrayal can get old after a while
>>
>>317810
>I'd argue that political strife is largely what propelled the region to dominance, as each little kingdom and nation-state was in constant competition with their neighbors.
Actually, Europe if anything was more peaceful than other parts of the world.
>>
>>317827
>Unified Kievan state
>Three East Slavic nations being the same in the beginning and only gradually starting to have differences (this is the big one, the pillar of Russian imperialism)
>Normanism and antinormanism
>Cossacks wanting to join Muscovy because of "reunification" or whatever reasons

I'd imagine all of the 20th century period is also radically different and less retarded, obviously, but I haven't got to that part yet.

I'd like to purchase another Roman Historian; one that deals with the Empire.

I'd also like a social history of Ancient Greece.

Any suggestions welcome :)
