Ancient Oriential Wisdom, surely:

VI-iv-14: He who wishes that his son should be born fair, study one Veda and attain a full term of life, should have rice cooked in milk, and he and his wife should eat it with clarified butter. Then they would be able to produce such a son.

VI-iv-15: He who wishes that his son should be born tawny or brown, study two Vedas and attain a full term of life, should have rice cooked in curd, and he and his wife should eat it with clarified butter. Then they would be able to produce such a son.

VI-iv-16: He who wishes that his son should be born dark with red eyes, study three Vedas and attain a full term of life, should have rice cooked in water and he and his wife should eat with clarified butter. Then they would be able to produce such a son.

VI-iv-17: He who wishes that a daughter should be born to him who would be a scholar and attain a full term of life, should have rice cooked with sesame, and he and his wife should eat it with clarified butter. Then they would be able to produce such a daughter.

China was conquered by nomad hordes several times in history. When West Jin dynasty collapsed, steppe warriors invaded the north and their people mixed with Han people since that, then we have Mongols and Nurchens conquest. Chinese nowaday is not purely Han blood

Geographic isolation from rest of world surely played a part

They collapsed all the fucking time. Every Chinese dynasty's collapse usually comes with huge civil wars and struggles of succession, and usually the death of the vast majority of the previous dynasty.

India is even worse--unlike the Chinese, who had always saw China as an ultimately united entity (or one that would ultimately united), the Indian states had no concept of this unity and were rarely ever unified--modern India as a single nation is younger even than the United States, and occupies more territory than the vast majority of past Indian empires.

The Mauryas never owned ' the majority'. The Maurya empire at its height could be described as a group of linked cities spread throughout the subcontinent, while VAST regions between them literally had 'here be wild people we do not govern'-status. And even those linked cities hardly formed a unified state, they were mostly bound by the personal success and charisma of a string of succesful Maurya emperors, but the Mauryas were never able to create a system of integrated institutions necessary for creating something resembling a state, hence its quick collapse after Ashoka's death.

Roman society wasn't capable of integrating barbarians. Accidents of religious politics played a role too, the Arianism of the goths prevented rapprochement with the papacy - a problem unheard of in a polytheistic society. (Rome did very well to integrate foreigners while it maintained polytheism.)

China on the other hand was very capable. Manchuria conquered China and is now part of China. Mongolia conquered China and was part of China until the 20th century.

You must also consider the fact that they were dealing with the steppe barbarians at their source. A Khan sneezes in mongolia and hordes flee westward. Quite a feat if you ask me.

they had de facto control of northern india and had the southern indian states as their clients.
yes they didn't have a more complex system, and that was because it wasn't feasible to develop it while communication was difficult because they didn't have access to a sea to shorten their trade routes.
Hence the division into viceroyalties
>>
The united India you see on the map is a British creation anyway. Before the British arrived there was no true united India. There was the Dravidians, Bengalis, Muslims, Hindus, etc etc. The closest they came to being united was probably the Mughals who were invaders anyhow. The Indian nation is as culturally disjointed (or at least was) as the continent of Europe.

this meme again.
They had a cultural cohesion in pre islamic india as well. How the fuck do you think Shankaracharya established his monasteries in the four corners of india?
or having a common mythos as in the mahabharata and the ramayana?
>mughals came the closest
wrong.
the only time the mughals expanded into southern india, they went into a death spiral that the eternal anglo took advantage of.
>current india
largely done by post independence annexation of princely states

>Roman society wasn't capable of integrating barbarians.

But it was? The germanic kings saw themselves as heirs of Rome and only the anglo-saxons managed to not becoming absorbed by the latin population. They were just not able or willing to unify the old roman empire.
>>
>>471070

Sure they called themselves Roman, but in reality they had never been to Rome, didn't speak the language, or followed the religion. It's the same as the Turks claiming to be "Rum" or the Russians claiming Moscow as a third Rome. It's another meaningless title.

And when I say they weren't capable, I mean they weren't capable in the 4th and 5th centuries, there was a ton of cultural shifts and religious upheavals. It didn't help any that the Christians saw the decline of state interests as part of their apocalyptic vision, and encouraged people to engage in spiritual endeavors rather than public works.

so besidees some ancient civilization by ravikarsharanvalapatialapravakyra, was India ever truly united?
>>
They both collapsed multiple times actually.

I think you should read into how geographically isolated they were from the rest of the world. China is surrounded by deserts, frozen steppe, ocean and jungles. India is a literally subcontinent hemmed in by the Himalayas, jungle and desert to the north and an ocean. Both civilizations were mostly limited to sea travel to link up with other civilizations.

India and China have modern borders roughly analogous to their ancient borders and fairly dominant national languages.

Europeans can't even make economic union work, let alone have borders that compare to the Holy Roman Empire or Western Roman Empire, or use a modern version of Latin across said region..
