In this thread post historical African weapons.

I've wanted to learn more about them and combat techniques, military strategies, etc.

I used to have a folder for this.

Mostly west african curved swords and central african throwing knives.

West african warfare was characterized by heavy cavalry where the environment allowed, and archer levies. African bows were weaker than eurasian bows so they used poison to compensate. The Mandinka were so skilled their bows could kill in less than 1 hour with a single scratch.

Sahelian armies used chainmail, iron helmets, and quilted armor.

Shields were typically made from wood and elephant or hippo hide (In eastern and southern Africa it was largely cow hide). In the sahel most battles were fought during the dry season.

Southern africans wouldn't host standing armies until the 18th century. Most of the time things came down to a strong chief assembling temporary allies with a great war drum.

In the rainforest warfare consisted largely of raids and ambushes. Pitched battles were very rare, even among strong kingdoms like Benin and Asanteman who could field tens of thousands of soldiers.
>>
>>315652

Those swords are intricate as fuck. They almost seem impractical.

Were the large armies of rainforest civilizations necessary if there was such limited movement?
>>
>>316056
....there weren't large armies or populations in the Central Rainforest bruh.

>They almost seem impractical.
Swords such as the Akrafena of the Akan people over time became symbolic status symbols.

Especially after colonization.
>Were the large armies of rainforest civilizations necessary if there was such limited movement?
You need a lot of bros if you want to lay siege to a city. The guinean rainforests were a patchwork of city states.

And people became skilled at building walls. Particularly the kingdom of Benin who had an extensive network of moats and walls. The walls there moved more earth than the Great Pyramid of Khufu.

Though not as tall the Great Wall of China, Benin's walls were 4x as long.

And every so often thousands of soldiers proves useful, like when particularly strong kingdoms like Asanteman, Oyo, or Dahomey got the chance to slug it out.
>>
An interesting archaeologically anomaly is that there was extensive use of crossbows in central Africa

Even when people learn about these societies they can't shake their scepticism. West africa is one of a handful of places that civilisation independently developed, it's cultural and historical significance is immense, but people can't get this importance into their heads. Any time it's brought up people spout shit like "Oh but they were just tribal kingdoms" and other such bullshit.

There was a guy the other day who refused to believe that some places in Africa were more advanced than the mesoamericans and kept downplaying the complexity of West african civilisation. The only reason I can think is that it's not shown in the media so people think it never happened.
>>
>>319742
Well depends what kind of Mesoamericans, and what time period
>>
>>319822
He was saying that the Aztecs were more advanced than any African civilisation ever. He had a point regarding the size of Tenochtitlan but otherwise he was full of shit.
>>
>>319742
It's nothing new.

When the bronzes of Benin and Ife were discovered people made up all sorts of /x/ tier theories about white übermensch from Atlantis leaving behind artifacts in west africa.

Although I wouldn't scorn the word tribal. All it means is an extended assortment of clans with a common language and culture. The Romans, Greeks, Persians, and Franks were all tribal. But over time tribal identity melts away.

Frankly I think retarda like you mention equate tribal with hunter gatherer or scattered family groups.
>>
>>315029
>need a reminder which way the pointy end goes
>>
>Frankly I think retarda like you mention equate tribal with hunter gatherer or scattered family groups.
You completely missed my point. I was taking issue with the fact that they said African kingdoms were "just" tribal kingdoms, as if their tribal nature precluded them from having any complexity. I'd go so far as to say that the modern nation state is to some extent tribal.

Kingdom of Benin in Nigeria
>They extend for some 16,000 kilometres in all, in a mosaic of more than 500 interconnected settlement boundaries. They cover 6,500 square kilometres and were all dug by the Edo people. In all, they are four times longer than the Great Wall of China, and consumed a hundred times more material than the Great Pyramid of Cheops. They took an estimated 150 million hours of digging to construct, and are perhaps the largest single archaeological phenomenon on the planet.

>"Like the Germans, the British employed the services of this
warlike people, who had long dominated the arid interior.
Apart from the lion's mane headdress worn by the figures
in the background, Masai warriors wore nothing more than
a skin cloak, leaving them, as the Victorian explorer Joseph
Thomson delicately expressed it, ready alike for love or for
war. The spear and sword were useful against wild beasts,
if not a rifle-armed soldier. The shield pattern
showed the wearer's clan and status: the small 'suns'
indicated the number of men he had killed in battle."

Considering the coastline of Africa doesn't have much in the way of natural harbors and tends to begin with high cliffs, brown water navies were far more popular.

War canoes could hold up to 40 rowers, 100 warriors, and cannons as well. These made for lightning fast raids, like in southern Nigeria, On many occasions they fended off British warships by blockading narrow creeks and waterways, and in disputes with the colonial regime or European merchants, shut down trade on the Benin river for several months. Piracy actually existed along the waterways, engaging boats taking goods to the coast as well as terrorizing unprepared villages.

As far as infantry warfare goes it was like everywhere else. The Mandingo horsemen of Liberia for example were said to call out to fearful or fleeing infantry opponents with two options: "Stand and you are a slave; run and you are a corpse.". Well disciplined spearmen and archers were able to sometimes stand their ground against cavalry in the sahel. In 1804 the Fulani jihadist declared war on the Hausa city state of Gobir. Now the Fulani were always horse riding pastoralists, but at this point in history they got tired of being treated like everyone's monkeyboys (In Yorubaland Fulani slaves were often used for milking cows exclusively. Something about it grossed the Yoruba out.) and began widespread conquests under the leadership of the fanatical Usman Dan Fodio. King Yunfa of Gobir was panicked about the strength of his former teacher Usman and asked his rival Hausa cities for aid. At the battle of Tsuntua in December of 1804 the Hausa were victorious against the Fulani horde, killing over 2,000 Fulani and scattering their forces. Didn't really matter in the long run since the Fulani seized the key cities of Kabbi and Gwandu the next year.

The horsemen of Gobir initially laughed at the Fulani for their incompetence at using cavalry tactics, and were met with massed arrow fire at the battle of Tabkin Kwotto. The Fulani held formation in a densely wooded area and left one flank of the army on a lake. Normally the Fulani used archers skirmishers but this time they arranged themselves into a tight square. Their bows eventually broke the formations of the Hausa, even in spite of their heavy armor.

Usman Dan Fodio wrote about the tactics his soldiers employed. Infantry wielded large elephant or hippo hide & wood shields with lances and javelins. Archers stood behind them with orders to aim for horses or more preferably the men riding them. Once the enemy broke, the Fulani infantry would split and let THEIR cavalry raise hell. These tactics were old fashioned, and when the English and French invaded the sahel they found it a quaint memory of their own knightly history.

The horse was adopted by Sahelians, likely the same way native Americans did.

By "breaking" feral horses that's why there traditionally was no saddle or they would cut the backs of horse until the bled and attached themselves naked almost eventually creating a large callous to sit on.

That or like a goat skin.

The Mali empire's army was headed by 16 noble clan leaders called "ton-ta-jon-ta-ni-woro" or "the sixteen slaves that carry the bow". Each was a quiver master or "Ton-Tigi". In Mandinka culture the bow represents war, like the sword in European cultures.

Horon is the Mandinka term for freemen. Horon armored cavalry were called Mandekalu. Mandekalu were the elite warriors of society: knights if you will. They were given horses by a Ton-Tigi. These men fought with sabers, lances, and imported long swords. By the time Mansa Musa took the throne Mali fielded about 10,000 of these knights.

Ton-Tigi functioned like feudal lords. Infantry were all freemen as well, slaves could only carry equipment and provide meals. But as the empire expanded and aged slaves were used as units too. Each tribe under Mali's power was expected to give a certain number of freemen to the army. The overwhelming majority of the 90,000 infantry were Mandinka.
But if needed be the Mansa had the authority given by the great council to summon peasant levies.

By the time Ibn Battuta stopped by for a visit there was an elite corps called the Farari who served as Ton-Tigi and defended far off provinces. Farimba were men resembling European Imperial Governers. Non-Mandinka rulers answered to them, and they always had the final say if local policy went against the law of the Mansa. The Duukunasi were soldiers who backed up the authority of the Farimba.

Sofa (Horse-father) were originally slaves meant for the purpose of caring for horses. These men followed Ton-Tigui on foot and provided support in the form of baggage carrying. Over time Sofa came to be used as a means of securing the loyalty of governors who were getting too big for their britches. Sofa were supplied with weapons and armor by the state, unlike Ton-Tigui who bought/inherited their own as a point of honor.

Mansa_Musa.jpg

The Farari could wield huge influence. See, they were divided into a northern and southern command. In 1599 both commanders ignored the Mansa's request for aid and he was crushed at the siege of Djenne. The Mossi people were considered a great thorn in the side of Mali, always rushing out of the Volta river basin to plunder the wealth of Mali and retreating. They were born in the saddle and Mansa Musa compared their behavior to the Mongols when he learned about them in Egypt.

The Mandinka has an interesting code of honor. Old men can't fight young men and vice versa, it was forbidden to fight a man who admitted he felt scared of you, and one had to allow their foe time to completely prepare for battle etc. One Mandinka warrior even allowed his enemy to return home and bring something he needed before their duel commenced.

The Mossi fought in raiding units of 10 to 15 men. And Mossi king delegated supreme command on expeditions to a field commander, or tansoba. Informants or scouts would locate a settlement or caravan. The raiding force took advantage of terrain, screening their approach, and utilizing knowledge of supply points like watering holes. March order was typically single file, until the target was spotted. The horsemen then charged, usually encircling the target, seizing slaves and cattle, and making a quick retreat. In bigger expeditions, a more formal battle order was taken. Infantry skirmishers, who were usually considered expendable, formed a vanguard to engage the enemy. The cavalry next charged, organized into three units, right, center and left. If the initial infantry attack was unsuccessful, the cavalry might retreat, leaving the infantry to its own fate, or helping them if so ordered by the force commander.

Mali was always dealing with their incursions from the south as well as those of the Tuareg raiders to the north. The Volta basin is poor in riches and the Mossi had to make a living somehow.

Consider the following:

In the early clashes with thc British and the Boers, Basotho riflemen were hopelessly outclassed. Their aim was wild, and their bullets fell short. In one of the early engagemcnts of the war of 1865, somc 2,000 Sotho charged to within 100 yards of a Boer line and loosed a volley-which hit only one horse. When the Boers returned the fire, they killed 65 Sotho.

By the time of the Gun War the situation had begun to change. Diggers at Kimberley were offering a gun in payment for a season's work, and modern breech-loaders such as Sniders and Enfields attracted more labourers than antiquated flintlocks. Other new labour-intensive industries, such as building railways, did not pay in guns, but it was relatively easy for workers to exchange their wages for them. Despite official disapproval of this trade, and a fear of black uprising amongst the settlers, it was particularly effective at securing labour.

So many guns passed into African hands that the Sotho came to regard possession ofa gun as an essential mark of manhood.

>asante
>good marksmen
That depends on how you look at it. I quote:

By late 1800s, guns were the universal arm of the Asante, but like most African warriors they had problems obtaining spare parts and ammunition. To some extent these were overcome by using home-produced powder and bullets, though the powder was coarse, and the danger of guns exploding remained very real.

Such guns had a range of 200 yards, but in fact few marksmen could aim with accuracy beyond 30 yards, and the Aigh t ofthe slug was often erratic. Weather conditions did not help since humidity and sudden downpours could both ruin the powder.

It goes on to say that none of this really mattered because, in jungle war-fare, visibility was limited anyway and skirmishes were very close-quartered.

The book is "Queen Victoria's Enemies: North Africa" from the Osprey series.

Powder and shot were carried in ornate war-belts made of hide. The belts carried gourds for the powder, and wooden containers for the shot. Knives were also often attached the belt: though they might be used in hand-to-hand combat, their chief function was to remove the head of a fallen enemy, which was a prize trophy. Human skulls and bones decorated Asante war-drums, conferring something of the spiritual power of the victim on the army.

The area was so dangerous, both because of the climate and hostilities with the asante, that it was nicknamed "The White Man's Grave".

Egyptian art work shows that the Kushites, who had the Kingdom of Kush, which made everything i posted, were extremely black.

From around the 2nd Century AD the Kushite civilisation began to decline for various reasons, and the population declined sharply, In the 4th century AD the Noba people invaded the region from the west, they were lighter skinned Africans. A few centuries later the Axumites invaded and inhabited the region. They were lighter skinned Ethiopian types. And then of course you have the Islamic invasions, as well as a gradual fusion with Egyptians.

The west africans had the most retarded weapons imaginable. They actual armies were more reasonable even if useless, but their personal weapons were full retard.

We east africans mingled a lot with middle easteners so they shared a lot of their military tactics.

The rest had sticks.

It's really just racism, much of it unintentional. People assume Africa was just "tribes" of identical black people all living the same way for 30,000 years. An enormous amount of posters truly believe that West Africa was "stone age", and there's that guy here who insists that black Africans never domesticated cattle.

People have a very strong, very incomplete view of Africa and it's difficult to shake that. If you believe that black Africans are innately inferior, it's impossible to shake any misconceptions about the region.

It's interesting how their armor is almost exclusively against cutting weapons.

One would think the prevalent of the spear would bring forth a more european armor design.
