I think this us why Gnostic Christianity is very important to people who want to approach the Bible in the present day.
There are a lot of similar stories to what is in the old testament, in pre historic SW Asia.
The beginning of the bible is a bunch of stories and etiological myths that are either borrowed from or related to other near eastern societies.
Then you get into the stuff which is probably mythologized history, like Judges and Samuel.
It's important to realize that the bible is not a book, it's a series of books of various contents.

"The Bible" is not a unitary composition - it is a collection of books, by many authors. There are stories that derive from other cultures (noticeably in Genesis, but scattered here and there throughout), but nobody is accusing Paul, for example, of ripping off Sumerian mythology in his letter to the Romans.
