Of course they did

Uh so I think you are confused.

There are Southeast Africans who are Bantu, a population of Austronesian speakers who from what it looks like had already creolized by the tine they reached the island and an ancient group that became known as Vazimba

They rowed against the current when exploring so when they could always take the currents back home if they didn't find anything. They also followed birds which can travel many hundreds of miles.

But yeah, they were pretty based when it came to how far they got. It really speaks to what humans are capable of even when all they have to work with is logs and string.

This thread is relevant to my interests, desu. Mostly the origin of the the micronesian, polynesian, and melanesian people. I have just scrolled through images on wikipedia and it is strange how some of the look asian, some of them look sub-saharan african and some look like, well, Maori (who kind of look like a mix between whites, asians, and blacks). Is this due to enviormental changes and isolated gene pools? I heard that the Negrito of the fillipines literally have sub-saharan DNA despite living in the philippines. Shit im tired ignore spelling pls
>>
>>310097
Start with Belich. Pretty sure he'd be the only available NZ historian on the matter widely available outside of New Zealand. He's also essentially the modern authority on the subject.
>>
>>310085
Yeah, about a month ago. Spent a fortnight in the village, phone died there so I never got round to posting.
>>310117
Polynesians and Micronesians are mostly South-East Asian with Papuan admixture whereas with Melanesians it's the other way around. I wouldn't really say Papuans look sub-Saharan African though. It's like saying a Korean with their white skin and straight hair looks European.

Anyone with Oceanian ancestry frustrated by the inability to properly study their roots?

Malagasy have been so quick to Christianize and absorb new technologies that it's impossible to find really important things such as traditional architecture, megaliths (if the even exist), costume and religion.

Maybe it's because the old books are all in French?

>>

Yeah, PNG guy here and i do get really frustrated over it. Though my people have retained much of our material culture we have lost a huge chunk of our pre-christian beliefs and practices. It doesn't help that we relied on oral tradition and that more 80% of the tribe died from disease upon contact.
>>
>>311092
plenty of em are but just as many are obese id say
>>
>>311124
Yeah but atleast you have a village! Are you aware of any early researchers in the area or perhaps any locals who written down pre-contact culture at all? Maybe a local university professor in the provincial capital?

I should say that actually a fair amount of knowledge is still out there, mostly in the older people, most young people are more interested in making it big in the city/overseas than learning culture.
>>
>>311152
we retained a lot more than other tribes in the area, the people who've arguably lost the most in the whole country are Motu people whose traditional land is where Port Moresby sits today.

this attempts to explain why our reputation for sorcery grew after contact

Airstrip One sucks, it wont stop raining.
>>
>>311228
Yeah I already started last time i was in the pangua (village) I come from both the Lopia Va'a and Unga'unga lines so I've got a lot of relatives who hold that knowledge to listen to.
The old people are the most knowledgeable though and they're dieing everyday. It's especially hard with them asking questions about spirituality though because they sometimes have suspicions that their knowledge could one day be used against them or their descendants.

Jw anon, are you Maori or Malagasy or?

>>
>>311258
Some Papuans (as in from Territory of Papua) who were alive during the colonial days actually want Australia to take the territory back because they are unhappy with people from the New Guinea region (formerly German New Guinea) coming in to the capital and central province and terrorizing native papuans.

Generally most people think the colonial period was necessary but not handled as well as it could have been and that Australia just let PNG become independent because they couldn't be bothered running it anymore.
>>
>>311270
ah this crazy anon but i don't think that was me then, I was asked on /int/ to take a pic though so idk? I haven't exchanged emails with anyone here but I'd be glad to with you ( but idk how to go about it). You seem like a cool guy!

>>
>>311285
There was also pressure from the UN and post WW2 anti-imperialism that didn't help.

Interesting to see such a consensus, I knew it was safer for whites under Aussie Admin but I didn't know if that carried over for Natives.

Another question, how much did racial policy play a part in Australian-administration Papua New Guinea?
I recall reading from a socialist site (kek) that it was similar to pre civil-rights America, but how true would such a description be?
>>
>>311332
righto, i'll keep an eye out for you. Did the guy happen to tell you what tribe he was from?

>>311342
Yeah, you're right.
I don't know that much about racial policy, but I know that the Aussies would work to undermine chiefly authority and replace it with authority from the church and colonial administrators.
Also indigenous languages were banned in schools (offending children would be caned or beat and shamed), local grown men, even police officers and chiefs would be called boys whereas any white no matter his position would be referred to by natives as master.
Even today in the Motu language white men are called 'Tau Bada' lit. big man and white women 'Sina Bada' - big mother. The word 'bada' wasn't used as a physical descriptor but to denote power.
There's probably a lot more that I can't tell you

Black Melanesians, along with people like Andamanese, Vedda or Aeta, are remnants of the great coastal migration, which was one of the first succesful migrations of Homo sapiens out of Africa. It's incorrect to say that they have subsaharan DNA, because if how diverse it is: if you mapped genetic diversity of humans, it would look like a bunch of branches, almost all of (except one, which contains every other population, including negritos) them containing Subsaharans. The more Asian-looking groups are descendants of Austronesian expansion.

Will you show us a photo of your village?

Also are there still places like picrel in New Guinea, or are this a thing of the past?
>>
>>313295
Melanesians are not genetically united at all.

All Asian Negritos are closer to their non-negrito neighbors than each other.

Papuans are distinct from Australian Aboriginals

Jawara, Sentilese and Onge are all distinct from the above mentioned.

South Indians have separated from all the above over 30K years ago and are as genetically distinct as Europeans are to Asians.

Just because they are dark skin and in Asian doesn't mean they are at all related, these are literally the descendants of the first people to exist out of Africa.

I have Maori ancestors but I've never given it much thought desu

In 2010, just a few months after he won his second Superbowl, Troy Polamalu was surfing with his teammates in South California when a small child was dragged under the waves and began to struggle to stay above surface. As his teammates rushed to help, Polamalu held out an arm infront of them, stopping them and was reported saying by James Harrison (Steelers outside linebacker and a reigning Defensive Player Of the Year) "The waves have claimed her, let her fight for her own life". The players, dumbfounded, proceeded to watch her struggle until her body disappeared beneath the waves, lifeless. He was later spotted outside the child's house, making drowning gestures and thanking the family for their child's sacrifice to the great ocean.

>>
>>314550
Yeah because they burned all the forests down
>>
>>314563
You don't seem to understand the climatic processes of Australia. The environment was already drying from forest into scrub and as a response the burned the scrub into mosaic grassland/woodland that maximized carrying capacity for flora and fauna.

The eel farmers are actually the builders of complex runs and stone/lava walls that allowed for eels to be contained, harvested, dried and traded as needed.
