Why are the Alans so obscure compared to the other major tribes of the Migration Period? Were they just not considered cool enough?
>>
>>307882
they were only considered alans in the mid ages and sarmatians in the ancient times when they started to heavily mix with the slavs
>>
What do you think happened to them eventually?
>>
>>307897
See the expansion of R1a1

And also they were pushed towards Georgia to become the Ossetians
>>
>>307897
They assimilated. I think there's some Alan placenames in France and Spain
>>
Wait, I'm confused. Was Alan basically synonymous with Sarmatians? How did they get from the Caucasus to Spain and North Africa?
>>
>>307896
They were called the Alans before the fall of the Roman Empire, so I don't know if that's the period you're referring to as the mid ages
>>307897
Some fled into Europe and ended up assimilating into the local populations of Gaul, Iberia, and many joined up with the Vandals to form a kingdom in North Africa
the others formed the kingdom of Alania north of the Caucasus before the Mongols crushed them and forced them deeper into the mountains where they became Ossetians
>>307909
It's supposed that the name for Catalonia is derived from Goth-Alania since they both settled there
>>
>>307914
>Was Alan basically synonymous with Sarmatians?
I think it's more accurate to say that the Alans were all of Sarmatian descent but there were other Sarmatians besides the Alans
>How did they get from the Caucasus to Spain and North Africa?
The Huns are a hell of a drug

This should answer your question.

this doesn't answer my question, please explain

They were full of slightly dumb comedians who did a comedy show called QI.

Poor Bastards starved to death.
>>
>>307909
Majority of genetic leftovers of the Alans seems to be in Central Europe, particularly around the Polish.
>>
>>307882
They assimilated and didn't leave behind any visible legacy like the Germanic tribes did. They sort of just settled and assimilated rather than keeping a separate Iranian identity

not him but
>The Mongol invasion of the 7th/13th century and Tamerlane’s wars in the 8th/14th proved fatal to the Alan state. Its organization was destroyed, and the population suffered heavy loss. [...] A second group of Alans migrated with the Qipchaqs (Comani) into Europe, settling in Hungary. The territory they occupied is to this day called Jászság, “province of the Yas;” and its capital is Jászberény. They preserved their language and ethnic identity until the 15th century, but gradually adopted the Hungarian language and became assimilated.

It's mainly a romantic myth perpetuated by nobles detached from reality

"Centuries later modern scholarship discovered evidence showing that the Alans, a late Sarmatian people speaking an Iranian idiom, did invade Slavic tribes in Eastern Europe before the sixth century, and that these "Sarmatians evidently formed the area's ruling class, which was gradually Slavicized."[9] Their direct political connection to Poland, however, would remain somewhat uncertain.[10] In his 1970 publication The Sarmatians (in the series "Ancient Peoples and Places") Tadeusz Sulimirski (1898–1983), a Polish-British historian, archaeologist, and researcher on the ancient Sarmatians, discusses the abundant evidence of the ancient Sarmatian presence in Eastern Europe, e.g., the finds of various grave goods such as pottery, weapons, and jewelry. Possible ethnological and social influences on the Polish szlachta would include tamga-inspired heraldry, social organization, military practices, and burial customs."

But it says in archeological evidence they did influence the Slavic nobility and szlachta

Weren't they assimilated into the Frankish kingdom?
>>
>>312460
The Alans were assimilated into various kingdoms; only a relatively small contingent stayed in Gaul to be assimilated by the Franks, most (of the European Alans, not the Caucasian) went to North Africa with the Vandals and established a kingdom there
No idea what happened to them after that, probably suffered the same fate as the Vandals

Death by Belisarius?

Death by Belisarius.
On an unrelated note that sounds like a metal as fuck band name
>>
The tribes that managed to create kingdoms or empires are well known: Goths, Vandals, Franks, Huns, Lombards.

Who remembers the Heruli for example?
They fought together with the Huns at the battle of Chalons, with the Gepids against the Huns in Pannonia and fought with Huns on the side of Belisarius at the Battle of Dara.
Do people even know the Gepids?
>>
>>312608
The Alans established a kingdom in the Caucasus and the Vandalic Kingdom was actually the kingdom of both Vandals and Alans, as noted by the title Rex Wandalorum et Alanorum (King of the Vandals and Alans)
there are many minor tribes that have been forgotten to history but in my opinion the Alans definitely rank among the important ones that you listed
>>
How many people remembers the Suebi?
>>
>>312642
Good point. What happened to the Suebi?
>>
>>312646

Conquered by the Visigoths.
Forgotten by the posterity.
>>
>>312608
The Gepids were important, they had their own fairly major kingdom. The Heruli less so, but they pretty much destroyed Raetia and Noricum, there are some rather depressing sources from the area which make it look like the end of the world there.

They were annihilated by the Visigoths.

In Christmas day 405a.d Alans, Vandals and Suevi crossed the frozen Rhine and after sacking the Gaul they moved and settle into Spain. The Suebi settled in Gallaecia, the Vandals Silingi in Baetica and the Alans and Vandals Hasdingi in the Centre.

The hispano-romans were obviously not happy about this but Rome at the time was impotent to do something about it. So they called up the Visigoths with at the time had their own virtually independent kingdom in southwestern Gaul but had a pact of foederati with the WRE.

Upon hearing of the arrival of the Visigoths, the Vandals of Baetica packed their bags and sailed to North Africa; they Suebi went innawoods trying to avoid confrontation; the Alans and the Vandals of the Centre decided to make a stand and fight, and that's the last time we hear of them in History.

The Alans were Roman Foderati long before the Rhine crossing. They were settled within the Empire before the crossing.
