They suffered in the war, but so did Russia, Ukraine, White Russia, Serbia and China. And in a sense, so did Germany and Japan.
They fell under the socialist block which was unfree and undesirable. But so did Romania, Bulgaria and the Baltic states. But even worse off during the cold war were many countries in South America and Asia.
Before all that their empire fell, because they were weak. But compared to Ottoman rule, Russian rule was gentle enough. At least for the people, not for their pride.
Still, Poles are required to believe that their country has the most depressing history and no people suffered as much as the Poles. Truly, the "Jew" never left. Like Russians they believe they have the God given right to greatness; and the fact that they aren't great for the last 4 centuries, they will always blame on someone else.

I had a Jewish professor who was really studied in Eastern European culture. And he saw the rise of eastern european judaism in the region as a direct cause of wars and famine. This, theory is now under discussed or overlooked. But basically he saw a large percentage of European Jewry as a mass conversion of European christians. Christians often spoke about how christian nations must help one another but that was not the cause during times of war in the Europe. As feuding sides often took it out on the people in the middle. So Christians lost their faith and converted to Judaism. This region later attracted other Jewish people from other jewish enclaves under persecution, like Spain. West Ashkenazim, he theorized had a much more different origin, based out of France and Italy. And for the most part whom were much darker skinned on average. So basically he attributed the rise of European Judaism to regional strife. As the most war torn European countries had a larger Jewish population.
