I have the Barnes N Noble copy in my car.
It starts with pre-Roman, then Roman, then the Anglos, then the Vikings, then Normans, then it begins talking about the Normandies, Plantegantes, Bloises, etc. Churchill makes sure to talk about the politics and the common folk, and not just focus on battles and kings.
Volume one of the Barnes n Noble version goes up until the 1400-1500s

Kinda hilarious. I'm British but the guys Bias is undeniable. However they give great insights into Churchill himself and what he thought and believed.
A good read though.
Peter Ackroyd's History of England seems a pretty good introduction. I've only read the first volume (Foundation), but I found it interesting and I liked the style.
