1: There are a bunch of tribes living in an area, each one governing itself that squabble for power
2: One of these tribes (for simplicity sake your tribe) gains a slight advantage in administration, war fighting ability, a good alliance, the misfortune of others or some combination there of manages to conquer one of it's rivals and make them vassals
3: Now that you have a vassal you can use them to fund the creation of larger, better armies and so the conquest of a third tribe gets easier and so on for a bit, putting your loyal supporters and exceptional warriors in charge of new provinces to rule them as their little sub-dynasties, thus a kingdom is born.
4: Eventually your kingdoms hit a wall due to complications in regards to communication, rebellious vassal lords who want to make their provinces into either independent kingdoms or take over, costs of maintaining garrisons, run into or simply run out of land to conquer and expansion stops.
5: Time goes by, technology advances and language becomes more uniform across your kingdom.

The conclusion you are drawing that this somehow debunks ethnic nationalism is, I think, false. People have variously used it to uphold themselves, but if there was nothing to be exploited, it wouldn't be used in the first place. There are certain degrees of genetic parity that fosters between people a feeling of kinship, since it is a kind of kinship. The closer the genetic parity, the stronger the feeling of kinship. The degrees have become wider and wider, and people are now so alienated within the global sphere that the merest trace of a shared ancestry, the colour of your skin, is enough to claim that bond.
It has been exploited and used to unify people under a single banner. The idea of France brought the various Frankish tribes together and stopped them from fighting among themselves; they saw what was similar amongst themselves against what was different to the non-Frankish. White nationalism and people who deny this bond altogether, people who say there is only one race, the human race, and racists are the scum of the Earth, are both symptoms of the same thing, post-industrialization displacement of people and globalism.
Were we better off in our little tribes before some shit came along to unify us? Women were highly likely to die in child birth, and we didn't have any video games (although if you own a PS3 that is still the case). The alienation and loss of identity is the price you pay for luxury items and comfort.
