You might sort of be joking, but the Roman empire lives on in the form of places like America, Germany, and France. We're all the cultural inheritors of the empire that made the world that we now inhabit.

Russia never got any torch. The Slavs are the least of Rome's successors, and they certainly don't deserve any of Rome's legacy after that shit show of a revolution and century of evil.

You're talking out of your ass. Romans were highly prejudiced against Greeks during the Republican and early imperial eras, viewing them as degenerates. This disdain for Greeks remained common among the Roman aristocracy until the fall of the Western empire. As well, it lived on in the Catholic church and in the west, who came to view the Byzantines (ie. Greeks) as excessively indulgent people
>>
Tell me where the break in the continuity is from the Roman Empire to the "Byzantine" Roman Empire?

If it is when the capitol was moved to Constantinople, you must know that the imperial residence had been in various cities for a long time; Milan, Nicomedia. So that means the Roman empire almost fell before it began.

Heraclius making Greek the official language of the empire, or even before, it could be said that the eastern empire never truly was roman except for the few aristocrats who moved from the west
>>
>>291749

That's horseshit and you know it. Greeks were about the only people Romans viewed as being on the same level as them.
The fucking Roman Gods were Greek for fuck's sake, and Greek language was extensively used in both east and west.

The Catholic Church has nothing to do with ancient Rome's perception of Greeks. The Church disliked the Byzantines for completley different reasons, mainly because they viewed them as heretics after the Schism. It had nothing to do with "hurr dey greek so we hate dem."

Are you merely pretending to be retarded? Cato the Elder was the rare exception and after him few Roman nobles were against Greek culture. Shit, Roman emperors began to grow beards just to look like Greek philosophers.
>>
>>291769
Again you're talking out of your ass. You're going against actual primary sources and scholarship. Read a book then come back and try again
>>
>>291802
>Scipio Africanus was apparently the first among the Romans who shaved his beard. However, after that point, shaving seems to have caught on very quickly, and soon almost all Roman men were clean-shaven; being clean-shaven became a sign of being Roman and not Greek.

>were seen as equals, even pre hadrian

Nope. Not pre or post hadrian. As i said, the views of the emperor =/= views of the senators/aristocracy. 'Greek' was synonymous with excessive indulgence from the days of the Republic to the fall of the western empire.

roman aristocracy spoke to one another in greek, read works in greek and wrote in greek

the contempt was in a similar way americans hating on europe but being jealous of their culture / art, in other words they mocked greeks for their lack of political skills but imitated them on a cultural level.

this phihellenism started around -300, way before hadrian.

I know arguing with you is pointless but if you want to hear the other side check out A. Wardman, 1976. Rome's debt to Greece and E. Badian, 1970. Titus Quinctius Flamininus: Philhellenism and Realpolitik.

I would have said that the Roman Empire ended at 476 AD due to the ERE being distinct enough from the WRE but why do historians use the Byzantine line of emperors along with the Roman ones pre split? ALL ROADS MOTHERFUCKER.

I agree. A large territory united in the welfare of its heart, from which all power and wealth flows. Basically a modern nation, if we're simplifying.

>“Rome is our king , Lord Orobazus , though we give Rome the feminine form, Roma, and speak of Rome as 'her' and 'she.'

>The Greeks subordinated themselves to an ideal. You subordinate yourselves to one man, your king. But we Romans subordinate ourselves to Rome, and only to Rome. We bend the knee to no one human, Lord Orobazus, any more than we bend it to the abstraction of an ideal.

>Rome is our god, our king, our very lives. And though each Roman strives to enhance his own reputation, strives to be great in the eyes of his fellow Romans, in the long run it is all done to enhance Rome, and Rome's greatness.

>We worship a place, Lord Orobazus. Not a man. Not an ideal. Men come and go, their terms on earth are fleeting. And ideals shift and sway with every philosophical wind. But a place can be eternal as long as those who live in that place care for it, nurture it, make it even greater. I, Lucius Cornelius Sulla, am a great Roman. But at the end of my life, whatever I have done will have gone to swell the might and majesty of my place Rome.

I'm getting such a hard on right now.

Was there any civilization that served an idea rather than a man any more so than Rome? China was always about serving those above you in the Confucian hierarchy.
>>
Some of the comments in this thread are making sweeping generalisations about what Romans thought over periods of hundreds of years... You can't assume the same cultural outlook for someone living in the Republic at the time of Scipio Africanus as someone living in the Empire of the second or third centuries AD.

For example think of the changing attitudes of the British to the Germans or the Russians over the last 300 years. Cousins, rivals, allies, mortal enemies, mates again, enemies again...
