Basically, at one point, it was good for health. A woman that was covered in hot and sunny climate would have better skin and less risk for skin cancer. The veil originated as a Mesopotamian thing, and in Babylon it was the wealthiest women that went around covered head to toe, while the poor had to go uncovered.
